Postgame Quotes vs. Southern

Kansas State Head Coach and Players Quotes
Head coach Jeff Mittie

Opening statement…
“It was just one of those days. We could not buy a bucket early, and I thought our group fought hard. I would have liked to have seen us have better ball movement to score in the first half. It seemed like I was whipping them all day to move the ball and we felt like if we did then good things would happen. Fortunately, we found enough offense, but it was just one of those days.”

On circumstances being there to have a flat game…
“I think so, but I have been in these before where you come out and play great. We just seemed flat today and a little bit tired. We had a fairly tough practice yesterday. It was not unexpected. I thought Southern did some good things. They hit some shots that were a little bit crazy. I thought our defense was really good today and they seemed to have some bounces going in. I thought our group hung in there long enough. I saw them get a second gear toward the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth was pretty good.”

On having 16 assists on 19 baskets…
“I thought that is was okay. When you shoot it bad, it is really hard to have an assist, but 16 of 19 is good obviously. I thought Kindred (Wesemann) got locked on where we were not moving the ball well enough, but when we did move it we had some good plays. We just seemed early, that we did not have our rhythm or legs to shoot the basketball. Everybody always thinks as coaches, we like great games, but these types of games you like more about your team, their grit, and toughness. One of the things that concerned me early in the year was that we were shooting the ball well, but we had to shoot the ball well to win. This is a grittier performance that I think we needed to show that we can do. Coming back from 36 hours and two games, we are coming up on a stretch where we have three games in five days. We need to be able to do that, and we need to have a gritty performance like this.”

Guard Kindred Wesemann
On her play in the game…
“I just tried to find some more energy. I am kind of disappointed in myself, because I felt like I did not bring a lot of energy that my teammates needed to get us going. That is just something that I need to look at and do better.”

Guard Shaelyn Martin
On her second half play…
“Yeah, the first half was pretty rough, so I figured if I could keep getting on the glass like I was doing and wreak havoc on the defensive end that could help out our team. I needed to bring some energy and everyone started getting into that. You could see [Breanna] Lewis had nine rebounds as well she had high numbers so I think that just came out in the second half.”
