Postgame Quotes vs. TCU

Head coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“That was a great defensive performance by our group. They were outstanding. I think they really played well and I think they deserve a lot of credit for just finding a way to get some things done tonight.”

On their defensive play…
“The opponent is a very good offensive team and they are one of the best 3-point shooting team in the Big 12. I think they are number one actually, right now. We knew that we had our hands full. We kept trying to get our group to get their shooters inside the arc into all of our size and they still hit some tough floaters. (AJ) Alix hit that tough floater to cut it to three, but I think all and all our group really took the game plan and really did a nice job. Now, I also felt like, offensively, we had to play at a tempo that we were comfortable with playing. The first time that we played them, the tempo got away from us and tonight we were able to mix it where we attached, but also slow things down and we were able to take advantage of our size.”

On Megan Deines’ defense…
“I think we found a nice niche for her. She had a big steal to start the second half and that just sets the tone right away that we are coming out of half ready to go. Even though they outscored us in the third, their run in the third came in the last minute. That thing was right there, but we gave them a turnover, a couple free throws. I was real pleased with the performance. I thought Shaelyn Martin did an excellent job. She primarily had whoever Megan did not take and she primarily had Alix, which I think Alix had to work for her shots tonight. So good job by those two. Kelly Thomson came in and did a nice job. Kayla Goth did a nice job. We had multiple players do well.”

Center Breanna Lewis
On the offensive strategy…
“My team looks to go to me every time, so they did a great job of getting me the ball and I just try to do my best to execute and finish and it happened multiple times.”

Guard Megan Deines
On defending Zahna Medley…
“She can drive it and she can shoot it. What coach (Jeff Mittie) wanted was for her not to catch the ball at all. So, literally my only job was for her not to catch the ball. It feels great to know that she could not do what she is really good at and to help my team.”

Head Coach Raegan Pebley
Opening statement…
“Great crowd for Kansas State. I think the Big 12 is one of the best, if not the best, women’s basketball league in the country, top-to-bottom with talent. The way people support women’s teams here and just the competition that you are going to see. Hats off to Breanna Lewis. Great game for her. I am proud of our team that we did not roll over and that we kept fighting. In the end, I think her (Lewis) presence inside – even when we were trying to make a run – sustained their lead.”

On limitations in the game…
“I think both teams limited each other. I mean, it was a pretty low scoring first half. They had 27 points in the first half as well. I just think both teams had pretty good defensive game plans in the first half and were disruptive to each other. We will have to go back and look at film and just see some things. Some of our shots – shots that we would have normally hit – you hit a couple of those and they have to change what they do. I want our women to be confident shooters, so we will talk about shot selection a bit, but we just really want them to be confident. Both teams just played pretty good defense on each others’ perimeter.”

On run in the third quarter…
“I think we got some stops and defensive boards that let us create some tempo. We just did a better job moving the ball and penetrating the defense in the paint, which found some kicks and reversals into the baseline action. Again, I think that is just our guards staying confident.”
