Postgame Quotes vs. Texas

Head Coach Jeff Mittie
On Texas’ defense…
“They were very aware of their perimeter game, but Kindred [Wesemann] had the big game against them last year. They were not going to give her a lot of open looks. We had a lot of problems with our execution. We did not execute very well at all.”

On second quarter slump…
“I will have to look. I am going to have to look back on it, but they were not scoring and getting a lot of easy stuff either. I will have to look back on it. Some of the things that I felt like coming into the game that we would have opportunities at we did not execute very well. That is on me. I have to get our group to execute those things better. We just did not play very well down the stretch. I will have to go look at it again. It was hard to find points down the stretch. Turnovers were the real problem for us in that stretch. I think we had 11 maybe at half. Their pressure on the perimeter was very good. I think it changed our passing as well and we did not do those things very well.”

On being engaged in fourth quarter…
“One of the things I was disappointed in was we did not go make enough plays. I did not like how we were hesitant at times in the middle stretch of the game. One of the timeouts with eight minutes to go, I challenged them in the last stretch of the game to make plays in order to beat people in this league and Texas is 20-1 for a reason. We are not going to back into a victory against Texas. You have to go make plays. I was disappointed that we did not make plays. I wanted to make the end of the game better than we did in the middle parts. I thought we did that a little better. We had a better look to us and we played with a better aggressiveness. Those things were a little bit better.”

Guard Shaelyn Martin
On starting the game off strong…
“I thought we have done a good job having fast starts these past five games, especially with our four-win streak. I thought we just lost a little bit of focus in the second quarter and going into half. We seemed to come back some in the second half. We just need to make sure we do not have those lapses. When we do have those lapses, we cannot let them have those runs.”

Head Coach Karen Aston
On scoring consistently…
“I thought we hit some timely shots and having Imani (Boyette) in the second half. Just having her presence period – Imani and Kelsey (Lang) open things up. That is as bad as we have shot the ball all year. I think the second worst field goal percentage this year. They were not bad shots. We just did not shoot the ball well.”

On defending K-State…
“Well, considering with what Kindred Wesemann did to us last year, our first priority was not to let her have eight to ten three’s. That was a pretty big priority. Sometimes when that happens, you pick your poison and I thought we gave up some buckets to Bre (Breanna) Lewis and the other post players. The fact that we were able to limit their production from the perimeter was important to our team. Again, I thought we played really good defense until we started fouling in the fourth quarter and then we got undisciplined and just again, I do not know if we were fatigue or thought the game was over, but we have to solve that.”

On importance of away wins…
“Very, very important. Our team really knows that because last year we really struggled. We were real good at home and could not win a road game. We have actually been pretty consistent on the road. I am real proud of our team right now. It is not even February yet and we just won our 20th game. I am pleased with how our team is preparing themselves. I knew they would come out ready to play. They have been off all week and it was a big weekend for them. I knew that we would have to take a pretty big punch at the beginning and I thought we did that.”
