Postgame Quotes vs. WVU

Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“Well, I think the story here is West Virginia. Quite frankly, they had a lot of players play real well. When you go down the list of who played well for them, Bria Holmes in the first half goes 4-for-4 for three. Tynice Martin tonight gave them a big lift. You talk about those two from the perimeter. And then they got good performances off the bench – Desiree Rhodes played inside some. [Kayla] Montgomery got into some foul trouble, so they had some players really step up and have good performances.”

On West Virginia’s first half shooting…
“I have not seen every game, but the games that I have watched on film – I thought it was the best rhythm their offense has had. They played with a lot of confidence. So yes, it was the best that I saw on film.”

On West Virginia defensively…
“I think defensively they are just big and physical. It was hard for us to score. We got some backdoor stuff and we got them to loosen up a little bit. That is where we struggled. [Breanna Lewis] had a tough night inside. I thought she had good looks in there. They are going to be in and around youn and they are big. They lead the league in blocked shots so they are going to harass you. It is not always the one’s that they block, but the one’s that they contest and rush a little bit. We saw a lot of that tonight.”

On Shaelyn Martin’s performance…
“I did not feel like she had the same energy last game. She came off of a game with zero offense boards and so we really challenged her to get back to it. I felt like she was thinking too much and tonight I felt like she got back to doing all of the things that she does. She had three charges tonight, four offensive rebounds – just a game where she does all of the little things. And consequently, she was more involved on the offensive end because of doing all of those things, so I thought she got energy from all of those plays. That is what we need more of because I have not been pleased with the first two games. Tonight, I thought we had better energy and more toughness plays. Shaelyn needs to bring that for our basketball team because she has that ability.”

Forward Shaelyn Martin
On her energy tonight…
“Before the game, all of us were talking about how we needed to bring a lot of energy and I took it upon myself to be the one that gets everybody pumped up. I just wanted to do all of the little things possible and not just trigger my offense. I tried to keep that momentum the whole game and get other people involved with it.”

On her outside shooting…
“Usually it is my second option. I like to get to the basket first, but my feet were set and my teammates got the ball to me on target and on time so I just trusted my shot.”

On moving forward…
“Well, we look at the areas that we have improved. We definitely improved with our energy this game and working together as a team. We talked about making plays – taking charges, getting deflections, doing all of those little things. We did a lot better this game, so we just need to take what we have done well into the next game and just improve on that next step. We have to keep building and not worry about the mistakes we made. Yes, we need to improve on those mistakes, but we cannot dwell on them. We need to focus on what we need to focus on.”

Head Coach Mike Carey
Opening statement…
“Needless to say the first half we shot the ball very well against their zone. Second half, we started settling for threes instead of attacking it in. I kept telling Bria [Holmes] to start attacking and she got a couple three point plays and that type of stuff. We did not do a good job on the boards, but you know we have been on the road now for five days. We were in foul trouble the whole game. We were thin in the pant and we had our starting four and five in foul trouble the whole game. I am very happy with the win. I knew Kansas State would keep it a battle and come back. They always do. But it was great to get out of here with a win on the road.”

On easy baskets by K-State…
“Yeah, it did and we got back-doored there a little bit and on the boards we got killed. At times we had four freshmen on the floor, so we are going to make those mistakes at times. We just have to continue to get better. I liked our effort, but I did not think we finished it off by rebounding.”

Guard Bria Homes
On K-State’s zone…
“We saw a lot of open shots on the 3-point line. The middle was kind of clogged. Us knocking down shots opened up the middle more for us. It was just us knocking down shots.”

On their defensive play…
“I thought we had to be in weak side a lot to help our five out a lot tonight. They like to lob to the five a lot, so we had to be in weak a lot. We came out tonight with a lot of ball pressure up the lanes.”
