Rowing Season Continues at San Diego Crew Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women’s rowing team looks to continue to build momentum into the middle stretch of its schedule as it heads to San Diego, California to race in the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday and Sunday.

“We have continued to improve every day since our last race against Tulsa,” head coach Patrick Sweeney said. “The Crew Classic is a very important race, so I am hoping for some strong results this weekend.”

At last season’s Crew Classic, the Wildcats set program history as its 1V8, 2V8 and 1V4 boats qualified for the Grand Finals. The 1V8 also recorded a program-best second-place finish in its Grand Final to highlight last season’s regatta.

The 2V8 would finish in fifth place in the Grand Final of the event, while the 1V4 recorded a sixth-place finish to close out the competition for the Wildcats.

“It is a great regatta,” Sweeney added about the upcoming competition. “It will provide our younger team with a lot of experience and will really help us prepare for the Big 12 Championships.”

This season has provided a new set of challenges for the Wildcats as weather has kept them off of the water. K-State used its winter and spring camps to get out on the water to prepare for this weekend’s race, while also competing against the likes of Oklahoma and Tulsa.

In its last race against Tulsa, the 1V8 earned the team’s first win of the season, finishing in first place with a time of 8:03.5, just under five seconds faster than Tulsa’s B boat, which took second place in the race with a time of 8:08.1. The Wildcats’ B boat took fourth in the race with a time of 8:20.8.
