Schultejans Named Big 12 Rookie of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the second straight week, a K-State player was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week as Alyssa Schultejans picked up her first career honor for the period ending November 8, the conference office announced.

A product of Silver Lake (KS) High School, Schultejans led all Big 12 freshmen last week in kills (3.33), points (3.67) and aces (0.33) per set, helping lead K-State to its fourth-straight win with a sweep of Texas Tech on November 7. Schultejans totaled 10 kills against the Red Raiders as the outside hitter was one of only two attackers in the match to reach double-digits. She also added six digs (one shy of her career-high) and her team-leading 20th ace of the season. The double-digit kill effort by Schultejans was her second in as many matches and 11th this season.

For the year, Schultejans is pacing all Big 12 freshmen with 0.25 aces/set while the 20 aces are the most by a Wildcat freshman since 2013 (Katie Brand, 27). She is also third on K-State in kills with 212.

Schultejans joins Macy Flowers to make up the K-State duo of back-to-back rookie of the week award winners. The two, both former high school All-Americans, are the first ever Wildcat teammates to earn the Big 12’s Rookie of the Award in the same season since the award was created in 2008.

In total, K-State has four Big 12 player of the week awards this year as Kersten Kober (October 5) and Brand (October 26) were tabbed as the top defensive players.

Under head coach Suzie Fritz, the Wildcats have earned 44 Big 12 player of the week awards.

The Wildcats (15-8, 7-4 Big 12) continue their four-match homestand with the third contest of that stretch on Wednesday against Oklahoma (8-14, 2-8 Big 12). First serve in Ahearn Field House is set for 7 p.m.
