Slow Start Hinders K-State at Badger Invitational

MADISON, Wis. – The Kansas State men’s golf team received a 2-under par 70 from sophomore Jeremy Gandon but could not back that up with three other low scores as the Wildcats posted a 7-over par 295 during the first round of the Badger Invitational Sunday at University Ridge Golf Course.

Although the Wildcats fell into an early hole, they seemed to improve as the day progressed and enters Monday’s second round tied for ninth place.

“It wasn’t the start we wanted, but there are a lot of holes left. I expect us to come back and play much better the rest of the way,” said head coach Grant Robbins, whose team is just two shots away from a tie for fifth place and nine strokes behind the tournament leader Iowa State.

Gandon’s round featured an eagle on the second hole as the Charpey, France, native is just one stroke away from a four-way tie for first place.

“I thought Jeremy played very solid today,” Robbins said. “He struggled a little in practice this week, but as good players often do, he came out and played with a lot of confidence. He was able to put together a good round.”

Senior Connor Knabe, junior Trent Evans and sophomore Andrew Beckler posted identical scores of 3-over par 75. Senior Matt Green carded a 6-over par 78 and enters Monday’s second round in a tie for 71st.

Redshirt freshman Ben Fernandez held his own competing as an individual in his first competition as a Wildcat. The Southlake, Texas, product is currently tied for 19th at 1-over par 73.

K-State will look to improve Monday as it begins the second round of the Badger Invitational at 9 a.m. Live scoring from Madison can be found at, with updates posted at following lay tomorrow.
