AMES, Iowa – A trio of Wildcats opened the Iowa State Classic on Thursday by competing in the women’s pentathlon, and Richelle Farley led the way for Kansas State finishing third with her score of 3,671 points. Freshmen Joslyn Barnes and Sarah Kolmer also showed strong over the five events to take fifth and sixth, respectively.

Farley opened the competition with a time of 8.76 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles to stand in second. Kolmer ran her fastest time of the season in the hurdles as did fellow freshman Barnes. In the high jump, Barnes managed to move her way up the standings with the best leap in the competition as the discipline is one of her better events.

The trio fell back a bit in the shot put, but Kolmer did improve on her previous best mark in the event by more than a meter to score significantly more points in the event than in her previous pentathlon. Farley and Kolmer responded well in the long jump taking the top two spots and moving Farley into second overall heading into the final event. Farley leapt 5.67 meters (18-07.25) with Kolmer coming up just short her best jump of the season at 5.42m (17-09.50).

In the final event, Kolmer tried to make a push to move up the standings again finishing second in the 800 meters with her time of 2:18.13. She cut more than 10 seconds off her best time of the season and ended the day sixth overall in the pentathlon standings with her score of 3,579 points. Barnes was close to her previous time from the Bill Bergan Invitational and came up just short of her overall score from two weeks ago to take fifth at 3,612. Farley ran the 800 in 2:27.02.

K-State Head Coach Cliff Rovelto said he was pleased with how his newcomers all performed in the pentathlon as they prepare for the Big 12 Championships in two weeks. With Kolmer and Barnes being converted to multi-event athletes, and Farley transferring in from the juco level, he believes there is room for the group to improve and add to the quality depth already in the discipline area for the team.

“It was a pretty solid day,” Rovelto said. “Richelle needed this as this was her first pentathlon of the season for us. She was OK, but has room for much more. Joslyn was solid, and her shot put and hurdles were better than her last multi. Sarah had three PRs, and it was just a subpar high jump that hurt her score. It was good stuff all in all.”

Barnes and Farley will compete in open events over the weekend at the Iowa State Classic, while Kolmer heads to Arkansas to join another group of Wildcats where she will run a leg of the 4x400 relay.

It will be a busy weekend of action beginning Friday with a large group of distance runners highlighting the field for the Wildcats at the Iowa State Classic. K-State’s short sprinters will be in action at the Tyson Invitational hosted by Arkansas on Friday and Saturday along with some more of K-State’s female multis and a pair of pole vaulters.
