Wildcats Claim 8th at Big 12 Championships

AMES, Iowa - The Kansas State track and field team closed the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships with strong performances from its men's heptathletes, high jumpers and senior distance runner Beverly Ramos. Overall the women's team finished eighth with 54 points while the men claimed eighth and 44.5 points.

Ramos finished second in the women's 3,000 meters to tally her second second-place finish of the championship trailing only Iowa State's Lisa Koll in each race as Koll set Big 12 Championship records in both the 3,000M and 5,000M.

Moritz Cleve could not defend his title in the heptathlon but made it a dramatic finish forcing Missouri's Nick Adcock to run hard in the 1,000M to close the event. Cleve scored an NCAA automatic qualifying 5,767 points to finish second and earn eight points for the men's team. His score ranks third in the nation before seeing results from other conference championship meets across the country.

Cleve was joined on the podium by two teammates as Mantas Silkauskas and Rok Derzanic finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Silkauskas improved his best score to 5,579 to now rank fourth in school history. Derzanic scored 5,449 points as he and Silkauskas posted provisional marks.

The men's team scored big in the high jump with freshman Erik Kynard, Jr. finishing second and Michael Healey claimed fifth as the two combined for 12 points. Kynard leapt a personal best 7-03.75 in a dramatic battle with Nebraska's Paul Hamilton. Kynard trailed Hamilton based on jumps heading into the 7-03.75 height, but he cleared that bar before his opponent to reclaim the lead. Then, with Kynard jumping first on the 7-05.00 bar it came down to Hamilton's last attempt to determine the champion. Hamilton cleared the height to snatch the title out of Kynard's hands in an exciting high jump competition.

Cassie Styers also shined for the Wildcats in the women's high jump as she cleared the first three heights on her first attempt to move among the leaders of the pack. Styers cleared her previous personal best 5-07.25 on her first attempt to guarantee a spot on the podium and could not clear the next height as she finished fifth after entering the meet ranked 13th in the conference this season.

The Wildcats scored points in the mid-distance events with a men's and women's representative in the 800M and 1,000M. The women also had Lekesha Pointer-Allen in the 600 yard run. Boglarka Bozzay finished fourth in the 1,000M as did Armando Del Valle in the men's race. Freshman Sara Stoakes took third in the women's 800M, and the pair of Jack Sachse and Jacob Davies finished sixth and eighth, respectively.

K-State had a pair of hurdlers earn points for their teams with Denise Baker and Jeffrey Julmis each making the final in the 60 meter hurdles. Julmis improved his personal best time to 7.83 in the race.

Texas A&M's women won the team championship with 130.5 points and Oklahoma took home the men's trophy in a tightly contested matchup with Nebraska as the two teams went into the 4x400 relay with OU up by one point. Proving the depth and strength of the conference, Texas A&M's finished third entering the meet as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation.
