K-State Runs, Throws Strong

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State Wildcats finished a weekend of exciting action on the track and in the field at Arizona State and Wichita State late Saturday evening. The Wildcats had freshman Sara Stoakes continue to shine in the 800 meters at the 31st Annual Sun Angel Track Classic in Tempe, Ariz., and saw big improvements for one thrower and more mid-distance depth at the K.T. Woodman Classic in Wichita.

Stoakes already came into the weekend with the fastest time in the Big 12 Conference in the 800M and improved upon that time finishing in 2:07.08 to place third at the Sun Angel Track Classic. The time also moves Stoakes into fifth in school history.

The mid-distance runners ran well in Arizona with a number of them hovering around their personal best times. One more Wildcat set a new personal record in the men's 800 with Jacob Davies improving to 1:52.43. Jack Sachse crossed the line in 1:50.74 to finish third.

In Wichita, the Wildcats competed well with five second-place finishes. Danny Schneider led the way finishing as the runner-up in both the 800 and 1,500. Emilee Morris also came in second in the women's 1,500 meters.

K-State showed strength in the field events at the K.T. Woodman Classic as well with freshman Derek Jerde making his outdoor debut in the high jump and leaping 6-09.75. Eric Thomas was again among the leaders in the discus finishing second with his throw of 179-02 - his best throw of the season by nearly nine feet. Jack Heiman also performed well for the Wildcats in the throws improving his personal best mark in both the hammer and discus.

The Wildcats will be back in action this week for the Kansas Relays in Lawrence beginning Wednesday. The Kansas Relays is one of the largest track meets in the Midwest with four days of action with some of the top high school and collegiate athletes competing at Hershberger Track and McCook-Olympic Field at Memorial Stadium.
