Gamble's PR Highlights Day Three of Drake Relays

April 25, 2014K-State AthleticsDES MOINES, Iowa – K-State Track and Field wrapped up day two action at the Drake Relays with several top-10 finishes. The Wildcats, most notably, got strong efforts from Tia' Gamble in the 400-meter hurdles, Dani Winters in the shot put, as well as the men’s 4x800 squad.

On the Track…

Tia' Gamble continued her impressive sophomore campaign with a career best performance in the 400-meter hurdles. Finishing sixth overall, Gamble’s time of 59.06 seconds eclipsed her previous career high time of 59.82 set at last season’s Jim Click Shootout. The effort also put her at fifth-best all-time in K-State history, as Gamble became the second Wildcat women’s athlete to run a sub-minute time in the event this season – Erica Twiss ran a career-best 58.28 at last weekend’s Beach Invitational.

For Gamble, the personal best performance makes it back-to-back meets that she has registered a PR, as she set a PR in the 400 meter dash at last week’s Cal State LA Twilight Open. Also competing in the 400 meter hurdles was Angela Hart, who finished 19th in a time of 1:02.20.

• In the Wildcats’ first 4x800 meter relay action of the season, the men’s team came away with a sixth-place finish out of a field of 11 schools. The relay squad of Kyle Hanson, Logan Smith, Kain Ellis and Ryan Hershner clocked in at 7:31.11, finishing a little over a second behind fifth-place Minnesota (7:30.13).

On the women’s side, Sonja Schneider, Sonia Gaskin, Marija Stambolic and Marie Taylor faced a competitive field that included a distant top-two in Purdue and Baylor, with both schools clocking in at nearly seven seconds ahead of third-place finisher Missouri. The Wildcat women placed ninth in the relay, finishing in a time of 8:52.38.

• Rounding out the action on the track was the women’s 4x400 team consisting of Sarah Kolmer, Jordan Matthews, Hart and Gamble. Much like the women’s 4x800 squad, the 4x400 team faced a deep field, as they placed 11th in a time of 3:39.87. Despite not qualifying for tomorrow’s 4x400 final, it was a strong effort that was less than a half-second away from the eighth and final qualifying spot – Washington finished eighth in a time of 3:39.40.

• Lastly, in late action on Thursday, Laura Galvan took 20th in the 5000 meter run in a time of 17:04.30. It was her second time competing in the event this season, as she saw an eight-plus second improvement from her first run of 17:13.10.

In the Field…

Dani Winters highlighted K-State’s effort in the field, finishing fourth in the shot put with a mark of 15.47m/50-09.25. It was her best finish in the event this season since she finished second at the Jim Click Shootout. Winters’ final mark was also only second to her performance at the Jim Click Shootout, where she set a personal outdoor best mark of 15.75m/51-08.25.

• In the pole vault, Tommy Brady tied for ninth, while Kyle Wait failed to register a mark after missing on three attempts to clear 5.15m/16-10.75. Brady, who cleared 4.85m/15-11.00 and 5.00m/16-04.75, bowed out at 5.30m/17-04.50, finishing with a final height cleared of 5.15m.

Devin Field made his outdoor season debut in the long jump, finishing 26th with a mark of 6.77m/22-02.50. Field will compete tomorrow as well, making his 2014 outdoor debut in the triple jump scheduled for 1 p.m.

• Also worth mentioning, the Drake Relays held a 2013 IAAF World Championships Moscow rematch in the men’s high jump that included former Wildcat Erik Kynard. After winning the first-ever high jump in a Hy-Vee this past Monday, Kynard followed up that performance with a second-place finish in Drake Stadium. Kynard cleared 2.35m/7-08.50, missing on his following three attempts to set a new personal best at 2.38m/7-09.75.

The Wildcats finish up in Des Moines, Iowa, tomorrow, as action is expected to get started at 9 a.m., with Sara Savatovic in the hammer throw. For more information on K-State Track and Field visit
