Savatovic Takes 1st in Hammer at Drake Relays

April 26, 2014K-State AthleticsDES MOINES, Iowa – K-State Track and Field finished up its final road trip of the regular season at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.  The Wildcats’ fourth day of action at Drake Stadium was highlighted by a first-place performance by Sara Savatovic in the hammer throw, as well as a K-State top ten mark by the women’s distance medley relay team.

In the Field…

• Sophomore Sara Savatovic came away with a winning performance in the hammer throw. Competing for only the third time this outdoor season, Savatovic finished with an event-best throw of 60.53m/198-07.00.  She was the only athlete to surpass 60 meters, as second-place finisher, Carley Fehringer of Wayne State, finished less than a meter behind Savatovic at 59.56m/195-05.00.

The Crvenka, Serbia, native came into the event leading the field with the highest-ranked mark in DI at No. 5 and did not disappoint, besting the field of 27 competitors. Every thrower that finished in the top-10, aside from Fehringer, who ranked No. 2 in Division II, entered the event ranking within the DI top-100.

For Savatovic, it was her second victory in the hammer this season, as well as the fifth-time in young career that she has registered a mark over 60 meters.

• On the men’s side in the hammer, senior Alex Roe took 11th with a mark of 56.70m/186-00.00. Roe narrowly missed the cut of advancing to the event finals, registering only one mark on three attempts in the preliminary round.

• In the women’s triple jump, Alyssa Kelly placed 12th and tied her non-wind aided season-best mark of 12.09m/39-08.00. It was the first time in four meets that Kelly failed to finish within the event’s top-five.

• Lastly, Ryan Hershberger took 22nd in the men’s shot put. The senior registered a mark of 16.06m/52-08.25 in his final attempt of the afternoon to avoid fouling out of the event.

On the Track…

• In the women’s distance medley relay, Marija Stambolic, Erica Twiss, Sonia Gaskin and Mary Frances Donnelly set the sixth-best mark in school history, finishing seventh in a time of 11:33.01. Stambolic and Donnelly took the 1200 meter and 1600 legs of the relay, respectively, while Twiss and Gaskin ran the 400 meter and 800 meter portions.

The time was the fastest by a K-State women’s DMR team since the 2011 Drake Relays when Martina Tresch, TiAra Walpool, Laura Lee Baird and Sydney Messick teamed up to finish in a time of 11:29.27.

• In the men’s DMR, the K-State team of Logan Smith, Kyle Hanson, Kain Ellis and Ryan Hershner finished 15th in a time of 10:12.78. Like the women, it was the first time this year the men’s team had competed in a DMR.

• Rounding out the action on the track was Morgan Wedekind in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The freshman finished 12th in a time of 10:49.21, less than three seconds off her season-best time of 10:46.28 set at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.

With road competition done until the championship meets, the Wildcats close out the regular season with back-to-back home meets. First up will be the Ward Haylett Invitational on May 3 as K-State will play host to Air Force Academy, Kansas and Wichita State in a team scored meet. Admission to the Invitational is free and will kick off at 11 a.m., with the women’s javelin throw. More information on today’s action, as well as the first of two Wildcat home meets at R.V.
