Assistant Coach Tom Pappas

June 28, 2010

DES MOINES, Iowa - The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships concluded Sunday from Bulldog Stadium with a number of Wildcats showing they are among the nation's best. Among the highlights was assistant coach Tom Pappas finishing second in the decathlon and Erik Kynard claiming third in the junior men's high jump.

Pappas led the decathlon after the first day of action and came away in second after all 10 events scoring 8,101 points. Pappas, who has appeared in three Olympic games for Team USA will be stepping down as a full-time assistant coach on staff at K-State and return to a volunteer position to resume training for a possible fourth Olympics - a rare feat among decathletes.

Kynard finished third with his leap of 7-01.50 just missing out on the Junior National Team and a chance to compete at IAAF World Junior Championships later this summer.

Three more Wildcats competed at the junior level with redshirt freshman Ryan Hershberger claiming 13th in the discus with his throw of 171-02. Kyle Hanson also finished 13th in the 1,500 meters finishing one spot shy of advancing to the final. Lauren Garrott crossed the line in 1:04.46 to finish 20th in the junior women's 400 meter hurdles.

Junior Ali Pistora finished 14th in the women's javelin throw with her launch of 149-04 and hurdler Jeffrey Julmis came in 20th in the 110 meter hurdles after clocking 13.97 seconds into a strong headwind.

A pair of former Wildcats were also in competition with Amy Mortimer running to a sixth-place finish in the women's 1,500M with her time of 4:16.89. Loren Groves threw the hammer 198-09 as she finished 12th.

In addition to the current and former Wildcats, two volunteer coaches were in action for the women's heptathlon. Bettie Wade finished third with 5,966 points, and Kacey Hill was close behind in fourth scoring 5,804 points.
