K-State Places Top-10 in National Dual Team Rankings

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State Track and Field saw both its men’s and women’s squads earn top-10 spots in the first collegiate dual meet rankings of 2014-15 by Track and Field News. Released this past Monday, the Wildcat women sit at No. 3 in the country, while the men slot in at No. 10, thanks to the combined victory over Wichita State and Kansas in the KSU-KU-WSU Triangular.

For the women, also the No. 12-ranked team in Division I according to the USTFCCCA, are the highest-ranked Big 12 team in the country, just ahead of Texas (No. 4), and improved to 2-0 in dual meet competition this season. Led by Akela Jones, who scored a meet-high 20 points, the Wildcat women notched 144 points of K-State’s 261 overall points to outscore both the Wichita State women, 101, and KU, 97. K-State handed Wichita State (2-1) its first loss in a dual this season, as well as kept KU (0-2) winless – both of K-State’s opponents rank in the national duals top-25 at No. 16 and No. 19, respectively.

On the men’s side, the K-State men picked up 117 points to narrowly outscore both the Shocker (116) and Jayhawk (105) men’s teams. Junior Devin Field led the way for the ‘Cats, picking up 14 points thanks to victories in both the long jump and triple jump. The men, who are 2-0 on the season, are one of only two Big 12 schools to hold a top-10 mark in the duals top-25. The Wildcats handed the No. 13 Shockers (1-1) their first loss of the season as well as dropped No. 22 Kansas to 0-2 on the season.

To be considered for a ranking, teams must have competed in one or more dual meets (defined as a meet between four or fewer teams) during the indoor campaign. The rankings accrued by Track and Field News are held to criteria that includes win/loss record, strength and depth of schedule, and quality and breadth of marks.

Both the K-State men’s and women’s will look to improve their dual meet rankings at this Saturday’s DeLoss Dodds Invitational, where the Wildcats will face off against Oklahoma State and Tulsa in a scored triple dual.
