Women Check in at No. 12 in USTFCCCA Top-25

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State Track and Field women checked in at No. 12 in the first regular season edition of the NCAA Division I National Team Rankings, announced earlier today by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The women, who were also ranked No. 12 in the USTFCCCA preseason rankings, are one of five Big 12 women’s teams to hold a spot in the national top-25.

Behind only the No.7-ranked Texas women in regards to the four conference foes in the top-25, the Wildcats have been buoyed by several impressive performances this season by newcomers and returners alike. A total of 14 individual athletes for K-State have combined to hold 21 top-50 Division I marks, including top-10 marks in the 200m (A'Keyla Mitchell – 7th), 800m (Sonia Gaskin – 4th), 60-meter hurdles (Akela Jones – 3rd), 4x400 (5th), long jump (Jones – 6th), shot put (Dani Winters – 10th) and pentathlon (Erica Twiss – 5th).

Since the USTFCCCA computer rankings began in 2008, the K-State women had been ranked in the regular season top-25 a total of four times, with each of those occurrences happening during the 2008 indoor season. The No. 12-ranking is the highest ever for a women’s indoor squad, besting the previous high of No. 17 that was earned in the second week rankings of 2008.

Also making a big jump in the rankings were the men, who moved from their preseason ranking of No. 68 to No. 34 in the country. The Wildcat men have gotten big boosts from freshmen Terrell Smith, Christoff Bryan, Nate Gipson  as well as sophomore Miles Bearden, with the latter three, in particular, currently holding top-15 Division I marks in the high jump.

Rankings, which will be released every Monday until the end of the indoor season, are based off of marks from past seasons (up until week four), as well as marks from the current season, with notable performances from current freshmen and transfers weighing heavily in a school’s ability to move up and down the rankings.

The No. 12 K-State women, as well as the No. 34 men, will look to continue their respective hot starts to the season, hitting the road for the first time later this week. The multis travel to Lawrence, Kansas for the Jayhawk Classic starting this Thursday, Jan. 29 through Jan. 30, while the rest of the Wildcats will head to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the New Mexico Team Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 31.
