Jones Earns Second Athlete of the Week Honor

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Akela Jones was named Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week for a second time this February, earning the accolade for her impressive showing at the Tyson Invitational. Announced by the conference earlier today, Jones’ performances in Fayetteville, Arkansas saw her rack up personal best and school record performances in both the long jump and 60-meter hurdles, as well as notch a top-10 Division I high jump mark.

The transfer from Oklahoma Baptist headlined a strong overall effort from the now USTFCCCA sixth-ranked Wildcat women at the Tyson Invitational. In the long jump, she hit 6.64m/21-09.50 in her third attempt of the evening to take first overall against a field of eight that included, in addition to herself, four jumpers in the DI top-20, as well as Bahamian record holder Bianca Stuart. The mark shattered both her K-State season-high of 6.38m/20-11.25 and overall PR of 6.55m/21-06, while also besting the school record mark set by Nina Kokot of in 6.43m/21-01.25 in 2011.

She followed the long jump performance by tying her school record time of 8.17 in the 60H semifinals, and then went on to place third in the high jump, clearing 1.85m/6-00.75. In all, Jones’ long jump mark slotted her at tops in Division I, while both her 60H time and high jump mark are top-seven in Division I. Including her personal best performance of 4,402 points in the pentathlon at this past January’s Jayhawk Classic, Jones holds NCAA Championship-qualifying marks in four separate events.

A native of St. Michael, Barbados, Jones, who also received the Big 12 weekly award for her performance in the aforementioned Jayhawk Classic, is the second Big 12 women’s athlete to receive the accolade twice this season – joining Texas Tech’s Cierra White.
