Groves captures Big 12 Award

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State sophomore Loren Groves broke a nine-year-old meet record in the women’s weight throw last Thursday during the Kansas State Open. Tuesday she was named the Big 12’s Female Athlete of the Week for meets of Feb. 13-19.

It is the first athlete-of-the-week honor this season for the Wildcats and Groves, who owns the Big 12’s top mark in the women’s weight throw for 2006-07.

Groves advanced to the Kansas State Open’s eight-woman finals with two throws of 65-08.25. In the finals, the sophomore unleashed a throw of 65-11.00 before setting a new personal-best and KSU Open record with a toss of 68-03.75 to surpass the previous meet record of 66-07.75 by Renetta Seiler of K-State in 1998.

With the meet victory Groves heads into Friday’s Big 12 Indoor Championships with victories in four of five weight throw competitions this season. The Scott City, Mo., native has also thrown beyond 65 feet in four of five meets this season and currently owns the fourth-longest weight throw in the nation for 2006-07.
