Wildcats Eye Big 12 Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State Wildcats travel to the Big 12 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship this week looking improve upons last years team finishes and return with more individual titles for the trophy case.

The Big 12 Championship will be hosted by Texas A&M at the school’s newly completed Gilliam Indoor Track and Field Stadium on Friday and Saturday. Last year, the Wildcat men finished eighth while the women came in ninth.

Two Wildcats will defend their individual titles at the conference championship. High jumper Scott Sellers will look to repeat after claiming his first indoor Big 12 title last year with a leap of 7-06.00. Sellers has posted three NCAA provisional qualifying marks this season with his highest jump coming at 7-02.25.

Loren Groves is looking to become the first three-time champion in the women’s weight throw. Groves has won back-to-back titles in the event and boasts the second longest throw in the nation this season at 70-00.25. A win by Groves would give K-State seven Big 12 titles in the event. The next closest total is four by Nebraska’s women.

A number of other Wildcats hope to continue improving on their way to the NCAA Championships in March and come back to Manhattan as Big 12 champs.

The trio of Moritz Cleve, Adam Fretwell and Mantas Silkauskas will compete in the heptathlon, an event the Wildcats have scored a number of points in previous year. Last season, the trio of Cleve, Fretwell and Rok Derzanic all finished in the top seven in the event earning a total of 16 points for the Wildcats.

This season, Cleve has posted the third highest point total in the heptathlon at 5,606. Silkauskas holds the No. 15 spot with his NCAA provisional score of 5,406. Fretwell’s season high is 4,370 and set a personal best at last year’s Big 12 Championship of 5,436.
