Heller Wins Weight Throw at Last Chance

AMES, Iowa Three female Kansas State track and field athletes took their shot at qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday at the ISU Last Chance Qualifier. One Wildcat captured an event title during competition on the Lied Recreation Center track.


Junior Laci Heller captured the weight throw title with a mark of 63-10.25. The product of Meriden, Kan., has a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 65-00.50, ranking 20th in the nation entering this weekend. Heller was attempting to reach her third straight NCAA Indoor Championship.


Sophomore Liliani Mendez finished third in the mile with a time of 4:54.09, while freshman teammate Beverly Ramos finished fifth with a clocking of 4:59.32.


Entering the weekend, Kansas State had two athletes automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, senior Kaylene Wagner (women’s high jump) and sophomore Scott Sellers (men’s high jump). The Wildcats have five athletes with provisional marks, including sophomore Loren Groves (women’s weight throw), junior Marianne Schlachter (women’s triple jump) and junior Morgan Bonds (women’s 800-meter run).


The 2007 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will begin March 9 at the Randal Tyson Track Complex in Fayetteville, Ark.
