Wildcats Face Challenge at Last Chance Meets

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State track and field team will compete in small numbers this upcoming weekend, one week prior to the NCAA Indoor Championships as well as the outdoor opener. The Wildcats will be sending five of their women competitors to Last Chance Meets, including seniors Morgan Bonds, Laci Heller and Marnyka Honeycutt.

Senior Heller will be the lone Wildcat to travel to Ames, Iowa, for the ISU Last Chance Meet. The Meriden, Kan., product will compete in the women’s weight throw, which she earned a bronze medal in at last week’s Big 12 Indoor Championships. Heller currently sits with the eighth-best mark among NCAA qualifiers, as she has a top provisional throw and career best of 66-10.00 from the Air Force Open on February 2nd.

K-State will travel four to the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind., for Notre Dame’s Last Chance Meet. The quartet of Bonds, Honeycutt, Liliani Mendez and Beverly Ramos will first compete on Friday in the women’s distance medley relay before participating in individual events on Saturday. Ramos will run in the 3000M and Bonds is scheduled for the 800M and 11:15 a.m. and 12:40 p.m., respectively. During the afternoon, Honeycutt will run in the 1:15 p.m. 200M, and Mendez and Ramos will close the KSU competition in the mile at 1:30 p.m.

Bonds has an NCAA provisional mark in the 800M and is currently ranked 17th among collegiate runners in the event. She will be looking to better her top run of 2:07.36 from the ISU Classic to secure a spot at Nationals. Ramos has also earned a provisional mark this season after the sophomore ran a time of 16:36.29 in the 5000M. Ramos sits at 31st among collegiate competitors, but will aim to reach the qualifying time of 9:15.80 (automatic) or 9:34.80 (provisional) in the 3000M.
