Kregers Named Big 12 Athlete of the Week

April 10, 2014K-State AthleticsMANHATTAN, Kan. – Sophomore Reinis Kregers was named Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for his impressive performance this past weekend in the decathlon at the Sam Adams Multi in Westmont, Calif. Kregers finished second at the Multi, setting personal bests in four of the decathlon’s final six events.

Sitting in seventh-place after the first day of competition, Kregers mounted a stellar comeback that saw him finish day two of competition with 7,304 points – less than 50 points behind the multi-event winner, Chico State’s Patrick J. Smith (7,351). The sophomore set personal bests in the 400 meter, 110 meter hurdles, javelin throw and 1500 meter. His javelin throw, in particular, was impressive as his mark of 57.89m/189-11.00 vaulted him to No. 5 all-time in the K-State decathlon top-10.

Kregers’ final score at the Multi currently has him ranked No. 9 in Division I, No. 6 in the West Region and No. 2 in the Big 12.  The Vecumnieki, Latvia native also holds Big 12 top-20 marks in eight separate events, including the No. 5 mark in the javelin throw.

The weekly accolade is the first of Kregers’ career as well as the first awarded to a K-State athlete this outdoor season. The indoor season saw the Wildcats rack up two Athlete of the Week honors with Alyx Treasure being the last K-State athlete to earn the award on Feb. 26. It is also the first Big 12 Outdoor weekly award for a K-State athlete since Erik Kynard was named Athlete of the Week on April 24, 2013.

Kregers, along with the rest of the Wildcats, are set to compete this Saturday, April 12, in the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Arizona. For more information on this weekend’s action, visit
