Trio of ?Cats Shine in South

MANHATTAN, Kan. A trio of Wildcats continued to ride momentum from their first day of competition at the LSU Combined Event on Thursday into Friday’s final day and to the podium. Mantas Silkauskas maintained his lead in the decathlon with Adam Fretwell finishing close behind, and Stephanie Hejde stayed strong finishing third in the heptathlon.

 

Silkauskas dominated the first day of the LSU Combined Event on Thursday and it was more of the same on Friday. He finished in the top three of all five events on Friday starting with a win in the 110 meter hurdles followed by a second-place finish in the discus.

 

Fretwell won the pole vault to continue his push with Silkauskas finishing close behind in third. Fretwell also bested the field in the javelin with his throw of 169-05 while Silkauskas again finished in second.

 

Silkauskas completed the decathlon with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7,414 points winning the event. Fretwell finished in fourth with 6,152 and did not earn any points in the final event of the decathlon for not finishing the 1,500 meters.

 

Success at the LSU Combined Event was not left to just the men, however. Hejde finished in third in the women’s heptathlon with a total of 4,514 points. After a strong showing on Thursday in the first four events, Hejde kept performing for the Wildcats.

 

Hejde began the day with a second-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 17-07.50. She then finished sixth in the javelin and closed the day running the 800 meters in 2:36.42 to finish fourth.
