21 Wildcats Earn Academic All-Big 12

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Big 12 Conference announced the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Teams on Tuesday with 21 Kansas State track and field athletes making the grade. Sixteen of those Wildcats earned first team accolades and a pair were honored with perfect 4.0 GPAs. The 16 first team honorees matches the total of all Wildcats named Academic All-Big 12 last year.

The women's team had nine student-athletes named to the first team with at least a 3.20 GPA. Senior Alyssa Bellinder led the way for the women's team with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Emily Dittemore and Stephanie Hejde earn first team honors for the third straight year. Chelsie Bonds and Meriel Harwood also repeat as members of the first team. Emily Morris, Megan-Anne Perrin, Ali Pistora and Beverly Ramos complete K-State's women on the first team.

On the men's first team Jack Sachse also had a perfect 4.0 GPA as only 26 student-athletes in the conference were nominated with perfect report card. Six more Wildcats joined Sachse on the men's first team. Senior Danny Schneider received his fourth first team honor. Moritz Cleve and Sam James each were named to the first team for the second time in their careers. Mitch Breeding, Mantas Silkauskas and Cole Zenisek each received first team honors for the first time.

Making the grade to be named to the second team for the women were Denise Baker, Amanda Boor, Boglarka Bozzay and Cassie Styers. Tyler Fennema was the lone Wildcat to make the men's second team.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and much have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated in a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Wildcats travel to Columbia, Mo., this week to compete in the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships beginning Friday.
