K-State Advances Two to National Championships

AUSTIN, Texas - Kansas State freshmen Erik Kynard and Martina Tresch each will compete at their first NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as the rookie duo advanced in their respective events on Friday at the 2010 NCAA West Regional at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Kynard continued his impressive K-State debut by finishing tied for first in the men's high jump with a clearance of 7-01.00. The product of Toledo, Ohio, surpassed four heights on his first attempt and was the only competitor to accomplish this on Friday afternoon. He has now surpassed seven feet in all five of his competitions this spring, including a personal-best of 7-04.50 at the Jim Click Shootout on April 3.

With his 7-01.00 clearance, Kynard will now compete June 9-12 at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Tresch carded her second-fastest time in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday night with a clocking of 10:16.85 to finish eighth overall and punch her ticket to Eugene, Ore.

The native of Rueti, Switzerland, entered this weekend after recording a new school record in the event of 10:04.27 during the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.

In the men's 110-meter hurdles, K-State advanced two to Saturday's quarterfinal. Junior Jeffrey Julmis finished third overall and won the second heat with a time of 13.71. This was his second-fastest time of the season, just shy of his school record of 13.62 during the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.

Also advancing in the men's 110-meter hurdles was freshman Balazs Baji. The Bekescaba, Hungary product tallied a time of 14.38 to finish 18th overall and third in the fourth heat.

The 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Regional will conclude on Saturday, as four Wildcats will be in action during the final day. Senior Eric Thomas will compete in the men's discus beginning at 12 p.m., while Baji and Julmis compete in the men's 110-meter hurdles beginning at 7:20 p.m., and senior Beverly Ramos wraps up the weekend in the women's 5,000-meter run at 8:05 p.m.
