Aug. 15, 2011

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State Wildcats are taking on the world this week with three track and field stars representing their homelands in the World University Games in Shenzhen, China. NCAA high jump champion Erik Kynard will be part of Team USA for the meet, and Martynas Jurgilas and Mantas Silkauskas will both represent their native Lithuania.

Jurgilas will be the first Wildcat to compete as he is set for preliminaries in the 100 meters on Tuesday morning in China. He will run in the second heat of the prelims where the top three finishers of the eight heats automatically advance to the next round in addition to the next best five times.

Kynard is also set to compete on Tuesday as he is the No. 1 ranked high jumper in the competition. A total of 31 jumpers are in the field with the competition split into two groups. To advance to the final jumpers must clear 2.23 meters (7-3.75) or be one of the top 12 after group qualifying. Following the World University Games, Kynard will travel to Deagu, South Korea, to join the senior national team for the IAAF World Championships.

Silkauskas will get in the blocks Friday morning for the first round of the 110 meter hurdles in the morning session. Heat sheets are not yet available for Friday’s events.

This is the first time since 2003 USA Track & Field has put together a team for the World University Games. A total of 10 men and 10 women will wear Red, White and Blue this week in China with five NCAA outdoor titles this season combined. The Big 12 Conference also is well represented on Team USA with Baylor’s Tiffany Townsend and Kansas’ Diamond Dixon and Mason Finley along with Texas’ Marquise Goodwin on the squad.
