Wildcats Sweep J.K. Gold Classic

Sept. 4, 2010

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State cross country teams started off the season by sweeping the competition at the J.K. Gold Classic. Both teams won their respective duals against host school Wichita State and Bradley University. The women's team competing without two of its top runners was still able to have a strong outing as senior Sydney Messick led the women's team finishing second place overall with a time of 13:35.72.

"The team really stepped it up and turned it up and it was exciting," Messcik said.

Coach Michael Smith was impressed with what he saw on the course adding, "We ran great today. It was a good performance from our runners and we ran well to compete."

Freshman Avery Clifton made her collegiate debut with a strong showing finishing fourth overall with a time of 14:07.93. Smith said he was pleased with what he saw from Clifton and anticipates her to improve as the season continues.

"It was a good run for Avery. She will just continue to get better and better," Smith said.

K-State had five runners finish in the top 10 with Boglarka Bozzay finishing third and Laura Lee Baird and Emilee Morris taking ninth and 10th respectively.

On the men's side sophomore Mitch Loring set the pace for K-State finishing the race in 18:57.02 to claim third overall. Freshman Adam Porter also made his collegiate debut Saturday and finished in sixth place with a time of 18:57.02.

"We ran really good as a team and were able to run as a pack today," Loring said of the men's performance.

The Wildcats will return to action in two weeks when they travel to participate in the Cowboy Jamboree hosted by Oklahoma State in Stillwater. The race traditionally boasts some of the top teams in the region and should be a good test for K-State early in the season.
