IOWA CITY, Iowa - K-State Cross Country was in action on Saturday at the Ashton Cross Country Course in Iowa City, Iowa for the Big Ten Preview. Both the men's and women's squads placed fourth, respectively, as senior Laura Galvan highlighted the morning's action for the Wildcats with a fifth-place individual finish.

Coaching for the last time at K-State, before heading to West Point, New York to take office as the head track and field and cross country coach at the United States Military Academy, Mike Smith said this meet was met with many emotions.

"Emotions were running high today," Smith said. "Our top two runners ran outstanding races today. We are closer, today was better than Wichita for sure because Galvan and Wedekind were outstanding."

With her fifth top-5 finish at a time of 21:25.77, Galvan was pleased with her performance this weekend.

"Physically, I was feeling good," Galvan said. "I just really wanted to go and give my best because that was my last meet with coach Smith. Even though he is leaving, all the work I have done with him throughout the years is just going to help me the rest of the season."

With a plan in place, sophomore Morgan Wedekind, who placed ninth with a time of 21:46.69, said the teams channeled  the emotion come race time.

"We decided that we wanted to make our last race with coach Smith our best and we ran really hard for him," Wedekind said. "We also decided that we were going to use our emotions in a positive way and we were not going to exhaust ourselves from being sad or getting too worked up, we would still try and treat it like a normal meet."

With top-30 finishes, the men's team was led by Jeff Bachman and Bryan Zack, finishing 24th and 28th, respectively.

With a two week break ahead, the Wildcats will regroup before heading to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Chille Pepper Festival on Oct. 4.
