Galvan, Bachman Lead K-State at Pre-Nationals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Kansas State cross country teams completed regular season competition today at the Pre-National Invitational at the La Vern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. The women’s team finished 26th out of 42 teams in the 6K blue race; while the men’s team finished 24th out of 28 teams in the 8K white race.

The Pre-National Invitational gives 168 teams and over 1,6000 athletes the opportunity to run on the nation’s premier cross country course that will host the NCAA Division I Championships in late November.

Indiana won the men’s white race with a score of 164 over second-place finisher Drake (170), while Elon’s Luis Vargan won the individual title with a time of 24:20.3. Georgetown won the women’s blue race with a score of 110 over second-place Oregon (139) and Baylor’s Rachel Johnson claimed the individual title with a time of 20:21.1.

In his second meet as head coach, Ryun Godfrey said his team fared well amongst the nation’s top cross country teams.

“The day was okay at best,” Godfrey said. “It wasn’t a bad day by any means, but it wasn’t one of our best days, which we know is coming.”

Once again this season, senior Laura Galvan highlighted the women’s team finishing 51st in a time of 21:34.4. Following closely behind, sophomore Morgan Wedekind finished 83rd in a time of 21:55.5.

On the men’s side, sophomore Jeff Bachman led the Wildcat men’s team in the blue race with a 96th place finish in a time of 26:31.7 out of a field of 193 runners. It marked the second straight year that Bachman has paced the team at the Pre-National Invitational, as he finished in 64th place in 2013.

As the Wildcats head into postseason competition with the Big 12 Championship coming up on Nov. 1 in Lawrence, Kansas, Godfrey says this meet was good preparation for upcoming competition.

“I thought both men’s and women’s team put forth a good effort,” Godfrey said. “In terms of all five athletes running solid it wasn’t one of those days, so we are hoping that will happen at the Big 12s here in two weeks, but we also feel like we got a step closer to what we need to be doing at the Big 12 meet.”

K-State will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, as the Wildcats make the short trek to Lawrence to compete at the Big 12 Championship at Rim Rock Farm.
