Ramos, Messick Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State women's cross country runners Beverly Ramos and Sydney Messick were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association 2009 Division I All-Academic team. Ramos, a senior in physical science, has accumulated a 3.91 GPA while Sydney Messick, a junior in dietetics and kinesiology, currently holds a 3.53 GPA.

To be eligible for USTFCCCA All-Academic recognition, a student-athlete must garner a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average and must finish among the top 15 runners (or top 10 percent) of their respective NCAA regional meet. The list featured 104 USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees and represented 57 schools around the country. Fifteen runners from the Big 12 Conference were acknowledged with the award.

Ramos and Messick were a strong dynamic duo for the Wildcat women throughout the season. The two runners combined for nine individual top 15 finishes, including five top five finishes and helped the Wildcats claim their second-consecutive sixth-place team finish at the Big 12 Championship on October 31.

Ramos started her season strong by claiming two back-to-back first-place individual titles: one at the Missouri State Invitational and another at the South Dakota State Invitational. She continued onward and finished sixth at the Pre-National Invitational, Big 12 Championship and the Midwest Regional Championship. Her consecutive sixth-place finishes earned her recognition on the All-Big 12 Team and All-Regional Team. After her performance at the Midwest Regional, Ramos was selected to run as an individual at the NCAA Championship and crossed the finish line in 33rd place, a finish that brought her NCAA All-American honors. It marks the third career-time Ramos has been recognized as an USTFCCCA All-Academic honor.

Messick kicked off her 2009 campaign with a second-place finish at the J.K. Gold Classic. After a fourth-place performance at the Missouri State Classic, a third-place finish at the South Dakota State Invitational and a 19th-place finish at the Pre-National Invitational, Messick set her eyes on having a great outing at the Big 12 Championship. At the conference championship, she finished with a 14th-place 6K time of 21:59.60 and earned All-Big 12 honors. Messick closed her season by finishing 17th-place at the Midwest Regional Championship.
