Pierson, Cool Lead Wildcats at Timmons Invite

MANHATTAN, Kan.-  Solid individual performances highlighted the Kansas State cross country teams’ first competition of the 2006 season as the men’s team finished third overall, while the women took fourth at the Bob Timmons Invitational, Saturday, at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kan.

Freshman Lindsay Pierson led the Wildcat women with an impressive third-place finish in her first collegiate race. Pierson turned in a time of 22:42.89 on the 6K course. Head coach Michael Smith was pleased with Pierson’s results.

“Lindsay really did very well for it being this early in the season,” said Smith. “I was really pleased with the effort our women put out today. We’re young, but we’re only going to get better. There were some solid performances today.”

Junior Morgan Bonds, who finished ninth overall, set a new personal-best mark of 23:19.86 on a 6K course as she beat her previous record by 21 seconds.

Sophomore Kory Cool, a transfer from Johnson County CC, led the K-State men in his first race as a Wildcat. Cool finished fifth overall, tallying a 26:26.10 mark on the 8K course as he beat his previous best time at Rim Rock Farm by almost 45 seconds.

“We’ve got a core group of guys that showed they can be competitive,” said Smith. “We’re not ready to take a giant leap right now, but we’re in a good position to keep working hard and get ready for the Big 12 meet.”

The Wildcats return home for the K-State/KU Dual Friday, Sept. 8, at Warner Park in Manhattan.
