MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State junior Laura Galvan was named Big 12 Runner of the Week for her performance at the J.K. Gold Classic this past Saturday. Galvan in her first race of the season won the J.K. Gold Classic (4K/6K) with a time of 13:49.72.

Galvan was excited to win her first career Big 12 Runner of the Week award.

"It felt good to win but the most exciting thing was that we won as a team." Galvan said. "My happiness was for everyone and it was pretty cool. I am excited and motivated to continue to do well and I look forward to the next competition."

Head Coach Michael Smith was proud and confident with how Galvan performed on Saturday.

"Laura is very talented and she worked very hard this summer to prepare for the cross country season so it is not a surprise to me that she won our first meet." Smith said. "I know that she has very high expectations for herself and this team, so a win to start the season is a great reward for all of the summer work and is only going to fuel her desire for more.

This is the second consecutive year that a Wildcat runner has been named Big 12 Runner of the Week after winning the J.K. Gold Classic. Junior Fernando Roman won the award after placing first at last year's J.K. Gold Classic with a time of 18:37.09.

K-State will have a week off then will continue action Sept. 21 as they travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the Woody Greeno Invitational.
