Wildcats to Run at Missouri State Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State’s men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete Saturday at the Missouri State Classic, in Springfield, Mo. The women’s 5K race will start at 9:00 a.m. followed by the men’s 8K race at 9:45 a.m.

Both Wildcat teams will run on the Missouri State Cross Country Course, the same course scheduled to host the Midwest Regional Championships in November. Head Coach Michael Smith said he hopes to utilize this meet as preparation for the course later in the season.

“The purpose of this meet is to run on the regional course,” Smith said. “A component in scheduling this meet was competing at a smaller competition with less emphasis on the hype and more emphasis on building confidence for the course down the road.”

Both the men and women are coming off victories at the J.K. Gold Classic, two weeks ago, and hope to feed off of the early success with strong races Saturday.

The women’s team is excited and eagerly anticipating the opportunity to race with its full team, as senior runner Beverly Ramos will open her season at the Classic after taking the first meet off to focus on training. In 2008, Ramos finished first among her teammates in every race and placed 55th out of 252 top Division I runners at the NCAA Championship and led the women’s team to a sixth place finish in the highly competitive Big 12 Conference.

“Beverly has been training extremely well,” Smith said. “Our entire group has been training well. If we come out of this weekend healthy and competitive, we will be happy. And if we get the same performance out of our group as we did at our first meet, with the addition of Beverly, we will be in great shape.”

Coach Smith is anxious to see how the men’s team runs this weekend in its first meet at the championship distance of 8K.

“Two weeks ago, our men were very competitive with the 6K distance,” said Smith. “We hope to compete at the same level with the 8K.”

Other teams to compete on Saturday are Missouri State, Tulsa, UMKC, Bradley and St. Louis.
