Cross Country Ready for Pre-NCAA Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan. After a having one event in the past three weeks the Kansas State cross country teams make their way to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-NCAA Championships. The meet will be hosted by Indiana State University at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, the same venue as the NCAA Championships on Nov. 19.

The K-State women’s team will begin competition on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the 6K Blue race while the men’s team will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the 8K open race. The meet will feature six races Blue, White and open for both men and women harriers, totaling to 164 teams competing on Saturday.

Ranked 11th in the Midwest region, the women’s team will face their toughest competition of the season, as eight of the Midwest Region’s top-ten teams will be will be competing beside the Wildcats. Head coach Michael Smith and the runners know that this will be a good opportunity to make their biggest statement of the season.

“We’ve trained at a high level in the past few weeks and I hope we can now compete at that level,” coach Smith said. “We are going to a meet where 12 of the teams are in the top-25 and I hope that we can measure up. I’d like to think that we can reach the top-25; that would be a good meet for us.”

The men will look towards junior Colin Swaney for a spark as he competes in his first meet of the season after recovering from a minor injury. Alex Umberger has led the men in each competition this season after finishing 71st at the Roy Griak Invitational (9/29) his last time out.

The high competition in Indiana will prepare the Wildcats for the next time they hit the road at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock, Texas on Nov. 10.
