Six Wildcats Named Academic All-Big 12

2014 Academic All-Big 12 Team

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Six members of the K-State Cross Country team were named to the Academic Big 12 First Team, the conference announced today. Sophomore Jenny McCarty, sophomore Morgan Wedekind, junior Mary Frances Donnelly, and senior Erika Schiller, represent the women's team, while sophomore Brett Bachman and senior Fernando Roman represent the men's team.

"I am very proud of their efforts in the classroom," head coach Ryun Godfrey said. "They are very disciplined with their schoolwork so it is good to see them get some recognition for that."

This year's honor marks the third consecutive time that Roman and Schiller have been selected to the Academic All-Big 12 team, while Donnelly earns the academic honors for a second straight season.

Roman, who boasts a perfect 4.00 GPA in mathematics, was also selected as a Rhodes and Marshall Scholar nominee earlier this month.

For Schiller and Donnelly, the former holds a 4.00 GPA in dietetics, while the latter is studying nutrition/kinesiology. All three athletes are expected to compete in the Big 12 Cross Country Championship later this week.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled meets. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
