Ramos and Mendez Named to All-Big 12 Team

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Big 12 Conference announced the All-Big 12 First Team for the 2008 Cross Country season naming junior Beverly Ramos and senior Liliani Mendez from the K-State women’s squad.

The selection is based on the top 15 finishers at the Big 12 Championships that took place this past weekend. Ramos placed fourth and Mendez finished 15th in the 6K race.

Mendez has been a solid performer for Head Coach Michael Smith’s women’s team during her four year career. In her sophomore season Mendez was the top runner for the Wildcats in six of the seven events that year. Her junior year was no let up. Mendez finished as the top runner for the Wildcats in four of the six events she competed in. This year Mendez has pushed through injury to perform at a high level. Mendez showed her senior leadership being the second runner for the Wildcats, pushing Ramos and the rest of her team, in all of the competitions this season.

Ramos’ top finish at the Big 12 Championships proved herself among the nation’s top runners. The Puerto Rico native has finished in the top-five in four events this season including three first place finishes. Her efforts have also earned her Big 12 Women’s Runner of the Week twice this season.

Both Ramos and Mendez will look to compete in the Mid-West Championships Nov. 15., in Stillwater, Okla.
