MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State earned its highest placing in the Big 12 Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll on Tuesday as the league’s coaches voted the Wildcats to finish fifth during the 2011 season.

K-State earned 49 points in the poll as it topped its previous best placing of seventh in both the 2008 and 2010 preseason polls.

Oklahoma edged Texas for the top spot in the poll, earning 78 points to the Longhorns’ 76 as OU received six first-place votes to Texas’ four. It marks the first time in Big 12 history the Sooners have been selected as the top pick in the preseason poll (records dating back to 1999).

Following Oklahoma and Texas, Texas A&M was picked third while Baylor was ahead of the Wildcats in fourth. Oklahoma State was selected sixth, while Texas Tech (seventh), Nebraska (eighth), Kansas (ninth) and Missouri (10th) rounded out the poll.

Kansas State returns 18 letterwinners, including six starters and nine pitchers off the 2010 squad that finished third in the Big 12 and advanced to the program’s second-straight NCAA Regional.

Included in the 18 returnees are three all-conference players from 2010, headlined by Nick Martini, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year and a 2011 preseason All-American. The junior outfielder is joined by fellow 2010 All-Big 12 performers in pitchers Evan Marshall (second team) and Kyle Hunter (honorable mention), while 2009 honorable mention All-Big 12 pick Jason King returns after sitting out 2010 due to injury.

K-State, which is receiving votes in both the NCBWA and USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ preseason polls, opens the 2011 campaign with a three-game series at Pacific beginning on Friday with a free live audio broadcast of the entire series on www.k-statesports.com and www.1350kman.com.
