K-State Falls to Oral Roberts, 5-1

ARLINGTON, Texas - Oral Roberts scratched across two runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 1-0 K-State lead and then added three insurance runs in the ninth for a 5-1 win Friday at Clay Gould Ballpark. With the loss, Kansas State dropped to 1-1 on the season, while Oral Roberts improved to 4-0.

With temperatures in the mid-30's and a strong north wind, it was a day for the pitchers after the bats dominated in Thursday's Wildcat win. Adam Cowart got the nod for the Wildcats and after giving up two singles to open the game, the senior settled in and retired 10 of the next 12 batters he faced. Cowart went 6.0 strong shutout innings, striking out eight and walking none in the no-decision.

Oral Roberts' ace Nick Jones (2-0) held the Wildcats to just two hits in 7.0 innings, both of which came off the bat of Jared Goedert. Chris Ashman relieved Jones and gave up two hits while earning the save for Oral Roberts.

K-State finally broke through against Jones in the fourth as Goedert belted a solo homer to straight-away center, his first of the season, to give the Cats a 1-0 lead.

Daniel Edwards relieved Cowart in the top of the seventh and gave up a solo homer to center off the bat of Tim Torres to tie the game at one. Then, a two-out single up the middle plated the go-ahead run for the Golden Eagles and a 2-1 lead.

B.J. Kissel and Bryan Peterson tossed the eighth and ninth innings for the Wildcats as the Golden Eagles took advantage of two walks and a hit batsman to plate three more runs on just one hit.

K-State threatened in the ninth as Goedert and Byron Wiley recorded singles and Matt Marasco was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two out. But, Jordan Cruz  was caught looking for the final out of the game.

Cold and wintry conditions in Arlington led to the cancellation of the rest of the UTA Invitational. Next action for the Wildcats is Friday, February 24 against Louisiana-Monroe in Lafayette, La. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
