MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State senior third baseman Matt Giller was named to the Spring Chick-fil-A Community of Champions list in an announcement by the Big 12 Conference.

The Manhattan, Kan., product has made an impact in his hometown in a variety of ways. He is an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Community (SAAC), where he served on the Cats for Cans and Tipoff for TP subcommittees. Additionally, he has served as a student-athlete speaker for the National Leadership Circle.

Through his heavy involvement with SAAC, Giller has also participated in numerous community service efforts, including Read to Achieve, Adopt a Family and Cats for Kids. He has also led team initiatives to help the Salvation Army and the Bramlage Coliseum cleaning crew, where the proceeds from the clean up were donated to a local charity.

Academically, Giller holds a 3.23 GPA as a double major in management and marketing. He completed his management degree last fall and will finish his marketing degree in the spring. In the spring of 2010, Giller was named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team while competing in all 59 games with 57 starts.

A fifth-year senior, Giller has played in 28 of the team’s 32 games with 25 starts this season. He is fourth on the team with a .318 batting average with one double, a home run and 10 RBI, while he holds a .404 on-base percentage.

During each semester, the Big 12 honors one student-athlete from each institution to the Community of Champions. To be considered for the list, a student-athlete must hold a 3.0 grade point average or higher, be involved in at least one community service program and demonstrate leadership and sportsmanship on and off the field. Kansas State will be awarded $4,500 from Chick-fil-A for Giller’s efforts.

Kansas State returns to action on Friday as the Wildcats begin a three-game Big 12 series against No. 5 Baylor at Tointon Family Stadium. Friday is Military Appreciation Night as military personnel can receive a general admission bench ticket for just $3, while a pregame tailgate is open to all fans beginning at 5 p.m., directly behind the stadium off College Avenue.
