Allen Named to Midseason Award Watch List

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State sophomore reliever James Allen was one of 45 pitchers nationally to be named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year midseason watch list, the organization announced Thursday.

Allen, who is 4-0 with a 2.01 ERA and three saves this season, represents the third Wildcat in the last three years to be named to the midseason watch list following Daniel Edwards in 2008 and Thomas Rooke last season.

Allen, a St. Charles, Mo., product, was one of six players in the Big 12 to be named to the watch list, joining Brett Bochy (Kansas), Ryan Duke (Oklahoma), Brooks Pinckard (Baylor), Chance Ruffin (Texas) and John Stilson (Texas A&M).

Allen's three saves this season are tied for seventh in the Big 12, while his 3.27 ERA against Big 12 opponents ranks 12th in the conference. Allen would rank fourth in the Big 12 in overall ERA but has not pitched the required minimum number of innings.

Allen turned in perhaps his best performance as a Wildcat on April 3 at Texas Tech when he entered the game with K-State trailing 5-0. He proceeded to retire 16 of the next 20 batters he faced and threw a career-high 5.1 innings. Allen, who tied his career high with five strikeouts, held the Red Raiders scoreless for five straight innings, while the offense scored 10 unanswered runs for the victory.

Allen and the Wildcats return to action on Friday, April 16, with a three-game series against Baylor. Friday's contest, which features a postgame fireworks show, is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
