Edwards Named to Howser Trophy Watch List

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State’s Daniel Edwards is one of just four relief pitchers and 50 total players who have been named to the Dick Howser Trophy watch list, an award given to the top player in collegiate baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has announced.

Edwards, who is among six Big 12 players on the list, has settled in nicely this season as the Wildcats’ new closer in 2007. A  Kingwood, Texas, native, Edwards has been brilliant so far with a Big 12-leading 10 saves in 11 chances and also has picked up two wins.

In 17 appearances this season, Edwards is 2-0 with a 0.72 ERA with 10 saves and has yielded just two total runs in 25.0 innings work and has not allowed a run in 16 of the 17 appearances. The junior has struck out a team-high 40 batters in those 25.0 innings while opponents are hitting just .115 against him. Dating back to last season, Edwards has recorded a save or a win in 13 of his last 18 appearances and has yielded two runs in his last 27.1 innings, which also includes a streak of 21.0 scoreless innings that was snapped earlier this season against Missouri.

His 10 saves this season are the second-most in single-season school history and he needs just one more to move into a tie for first. For his career, Edwards now has 13 saves, which are the second-most in school history and he needs five more to tie the school record of 18, set by David Johnson. Edwards also ranks second in school history in career relief appearances with 52.

The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Dick Howser Trophy based on three rounds of voting.  The 2007 winner will be announced at the College World Series in Omaha on Friday, June 15, at 10 a.m. CDT.

The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award.

Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.

Edwards was also recently named to the Stopper of the Year watch list, an award given annually to the nation’s top relief pitcher.
