Kyle Hunter

June 8, 2011

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State junior left-hander Kyle Hunter was selected with the second selection of the 31st round (No. 933 overall) by the Seattle Mariners on the final day of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft Wednesday.

Hunter was the fifth Wildcat taken in the 2011 draft after Evan Marshall and Jason King were selected in the fourth round, while Nick Martini and James Allen were drafted in the seventh round.

In addition to the five current Wildcats, three signees were also drafted. Left-handed pitcher Braden Shull was selected in the 27th round by Philadelphia, outfielder Robert Youngdahl was drafted in the 37th round by Boston, and right-hander Nate Williams was taken in the 38th round by Atlanta.

Hunter's selection marks the third time in the last four years that at least five current K-State players were drafted. Since head coach Brad Hill's first season in 2004, the Wildcats have had 27 players drafted, as well as 15 signees.

Hunter was drafted for the third time in his career on Wednesday. The left-hander was selected out of high school in the 33rd round of the 2008 draft by Tampa Bay and in the 43rd round by the New York Yankees last year. He is the second Wildcat drafted by Seattle after the organization selected Nate Tenbrink in the seventh round of the 2008 draft.

Hunter went 5-5 with a 4.57 ERA in 16 starts as a junior. In 90.2 innings of work, he struck out 80 batters as opposed to 25 walks. Hunter was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week after throwing 7.2 shutout innings against No. 7 Oklahoma. He came back with another solid outing against Sooners in the Big 12 Championship, allowing four runs on seven hits with a walk and nine strikeouts in seven innings.

A product of Galesburg, Ill., Hunter ranks third in school history in career wins (15), fifth in career starts (35) and ninth in career strikeouts (167).
