Edwards Named ABCA All-Region

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State senior relief pitcher Daniel Edwards was honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Tuesday as he was named to the 2008 ABCA All-Midwest Region Second Team.

Edwards, who also earned second-team accolades following the 2007, is the first Wildcat to earn all-region honors in back-to-back seasons. Heath Schesser and Scott Poepard were named all-region in 1997, while Pat Maloney was honored in 2002.

A right hander from Kingwood, Texas, Edwards became the first K-State player ever to be taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft as he was selected in the 25th round with the 766th overall pick last week.

Edwards, the Wildcat closer for the last two seasons, broke the school’s career and single-season saves records this past season with 26 and 12, respectively. He also broke the career records for game appearances and relief appearances with 86.

In 2008, Edwards was 5-3 with a 2.47 ERA to help lead the Wildcats to their highest conference finish since 2002 and the school’s first Big 12 Championship title game appearance.
