Kansas State Summer Baseball Update: June 13

Justin Bloxom is hitting .258 with 15 extra-base hits for High A Potomac.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

California Collegiate League
Seniors-to-be Wade Hinkle and Mike Kindel, along with future junior Tanner Witt, will play for the San Luis Obispo Blues of the California Collegiate League this summer… The trio has yet to play for the Blues, who are 6-1 on the year.

Cape Cod Baseball League
Sophomore-to-be Jared King is slated to play for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League this summer… The Commodores are 0-2 this season, and King is scheduled to begin playing within the next week.
 
Jayhawk Baseball League
Sophomores-to-be Ross Kivett and Jared Moore are playing for the Liberal Bee Jays… Updated statistics for the Bee Jays are not available.

Perfect Game Collegiate League
Dan Klein, a senior for the 2012 season, is playing for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles of the newly-created Perfect Game Collegiate League… In his first game on Sunday, Klein went 0-for-3 with a run scored in a 4-1 victory over Mohawk Valley… Glens Falls is 2-1 to begin the summer.

Texas Collegiate League
Junior-to-be Ryan Moore is playing for the East Texas PumpJacks of the Texas Collegiate League this summer, but has not yet played a game… The PumpJacks are fourth in the league with a 5-6 record.

Topeka Golden Giants
Four Wildcats – Shane Conlon, Blair DeBord, Gerardo Esquivel and Johnny Fasola – are playing for the Topeka Golden Giants, who are an independent collegiate summer team… DeBord opened the summer by going 4-for-5 with three doubles and four RBI on June 3… Topeka is 8-1 after beginning the season on a seven-game winning streak… Updated stats for the Golden Giants are not available.

Walter Johnson Baseball League
Sophomores-to-be Blake Freeman, Mitch Meyer and Adam Sonabend are playing for the Salina Blue Jays of the Walter Johnson Baseball League… Updated statistics for the Blue Jays are not available.

West Coast Collegiate League
Jake Doller, Matt Giller and Chase Graskewicz will play for the Cowlitz Black Bears of the West Coast League this summer, but have yet to see any action… The Black Bears are 2-4 to begin the season.

K-State Pros
Drew Biery: After beginning the year on the disabled list, Biery played in 19 games for Low A Augusta of the South Atlantic League, hitting .280 with three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI before being promoted to Double A Richmond of the Eastern League… A 2009 draft pick by San Francisco, Biery is 7-for-32 (.219) with a double and four RBI in 10 games in Double A… The third baseman recorded a two-hit contest with a RBI at Portland on Thursday and followed that up with two RBI on Friday… Biery was placed on the 7-Day Disabled List on Saturday… Richmond is 31-31 this season to tie for third in the western division, 3.5 games back of division-leader Harrisburg.

Justin Bloxom: A 2009 draft pick by the Washington Nationals, Bloxom has spent the entire 2011 season with the High A Potomac Nationals of the Carolina League… The infielder is hitting .258 (34-for-132) with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs and 19 RBI in 36 games this season… Bloxom had a 10-game hitting streak come to an end on Saturday, a streak that included a three-hit game with a double and a home run last Monday against Frederick… He also recorded a two-hit contest on Thursday against the Keys… Potomac is 26-37 this season.

Jared Goedert: A member of the 40-man roster for the Cleveland Indians, Goedert has played in 22 games this season as he is coming off an injury during spring training… A 2006 draft pick by the Indians, Goedert was 8-for-29 (.276) with two doubles, three home runs and nine RBI in eight games at Double A Akron before moving up to Triple A Columbus… Goedert, who spent the majority of the 2010 season in Columbus, is 12-for-48 (.250) with four doubles, three home runs and eight RBI in 14 games with the Clippers… The third baseman went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI on Thursday against Rochester before a 2-for-5 game with a double, another homer and three more RBI Sunday at Buffalo… Columbus is 42-22 this season to sit in first place in the International League West Division, 5.5 games ahead of second-place Louisville.

Ben Hornbeck: Hornbeck, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, began his season in extended spring training… The left-handed reliever has pitched in seven games for High A Stockton, allowing one earned run in 10.2 innings, good for a 0.84 ERA with just one walk and 16 strikeouts… He was promoted to Triple A Sacramento of the Pacific Coast League in late May and pitched in two games, including a scoreless inning against Oklahoma City on May 21 to earn the win… After going back to Stockton for a week, Hornbeck was again promoted to Sacramento on June 3 and has remained with the River Cats… In three outings last week, Hornbeck did not allow an earned run in 5.0 innings, surrendering just four hits with three walks and five strikeouts… He tossed two scoreless innings at Colorado Springs last Monday before another two scoreless frames with three strikeouts Thursday against Tacoma… Sacramento leads the Pacific South Division with a 40-24 record, five games ahead of Las Vegas.

Trevor Hurley: A 2008 draftee by Texas, Hurley has spent the entire 2011 season at High A Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League… In 17 appearances, the right-handed pitcher has four saves to tie for 10th in the league, while he holds a 1.69 ERA… Hurley has allowed four earned runs on 18 hits with 10 walks and 27 strikeouts in 21.1 innings, but he did not allow a run in his three outings last week… Hurley tossed two innings with three strikeouts on Tuesday against Winston-Salem before earning the save on Thursday against the Dash after throwing 1.1 no-hit innings with three strikeouts… At Kinston on Sunday, Hurley struck out four batters in two innings of work… Myrtle Beach is 36-27 this year to sit in first place in the southern division, three games ahead of second-place Kinston.

Carter Jurica: A third-round draft pick by San Francisco last season, Jurica has spent the 2011 season with High A San Jose of the California League… The shortstop is hitting .239 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI, but was placed on the disabled list on Sunday… Last Monday at Stockton, Jurica went 2-for-4 with a RBI… He came back with another two-hit game on Wednesday, including a double and a go-ahead three-run homer in the 11th inning that proved to be the winning blast… San Jose took home the north division first-half championship with a 45-17 record, finishing 12.5 games ahead of second-place Bakersfield.

A.J. Morris: A fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals in 2009, Morris was traded during the offseason to the Chicago Cubs… The right-hander is currently rehabbing from offseason surgery.

Adam Muenster: Muenster, a 2010 draftee by Cincinnati, has not yet been assigned a team for the 2011 season.

Justin Murray: Murray, a 2008 draft choice of Oakland, pitched in eight games between High A Stockton and Double A Round Rock with a 0-5 record and a 6.51 ERA before being released… The right-hander is now pitching for the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Baseball… Murray has started two games for the Wingnuts, holding a 2-0 record and a 3.10 ERA… He tossed eight shutout innings on Saturday against Sioux City, working around nine hits… Wichita leads the central division with a 17-12 record, 1.5 games ahead of second-place Gary SouthShore.

Nate Tenbrink: A seventh-round selection by the Seattle Mariners in 2008, Tenbrink has played in 53 games for the Double A Jackson Generals of the Southern League… The third baseman is hitting .223 with eight doubles, six triples, five home runs and 21 RBI… After beginning the week with four hitless games, Tenbrink went 1-for-2 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored on Saturday at Huntsville before a 1-for-4 contest with a RBI against the Stars on Sunday… Tenbrink ranks fourth in the league in triples and is tied for ninth in walks (30)… The Generals are second in the north division at 37-27, three games back of Tennessee.

Note: Members of the 2011 draft class from Kansas State will begin their professional careers within the next week... Jason King has been assigned to the Connecticut Tigers of Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… Nick Martini will also begin his professional career in the New York-Penn League with the Batavia Muckdogs… Evan Marshall has been assigned to the Yakima Bears of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… James Allen and Kyle Hunter have not been assigned teams as of Monday.
