K-State Summer Baseball Update: June 14

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

Alaska Baseball League
Juniors-to-be James Allen and Matt Applegate are pitching for the Mat-Su Miners, coached by former K-State volunteer assistant coach Craig Ringe... Applegate threw against Anchorage on Thursday, tossing two no-hit innings with three strikeouts... Allen did not throw in either of the two Miner games last week.

Cape Cod Baseball League
Nick Martini, the 2010 Big 12 Co-Player of the Year, is playing for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League, which begins play Monday night.

Central Plains Baseball League
Four K-State freshmen from this past season are playing in Junction City this summer... Jake Doller (pitcher), Chase Graskewicz (catcher), Ryan Moore (outfielder) and Tyler Sturges (pitcher) are joined by signees Johnny Fasola (pitcher/infielder), Shawn Lewick (pitcher) and Jared King (infielder)... Junction City is 3-5 after winning all three games last week, including two against the Topeka Golden Giants... Sturges took the win on Thursday in a 19-1 Generals win, while Lewick won a 1-0 decision Friday against the Golden Giants.

Coastal Plain League
Kent Urban and Kyle Hunter are slated to play for the Petersburg Generals this summer, but neither has competed in a game as of Monday... The Generals are fifth in the north division with a 5-11 record.

Jayhawk Baseball League
Junior-to-be Matt Giller and sophomore-to-be Blair DeBord are slated to play for the El Dorado Broncos... The Broncos are the defending National Baseball Congress (NBC) Champions with Giller on the squad a year ago... Updated statistics for the Broncos were not available... Sophomore-to-be Nick Cocking is playing for the Liberal Bee Jays, but updated statistics were not available.

Topeka Golden Giants (Independent)
Right-handed pitcher Brandon Faulkner and infielder Tanner Witt are playing for the Topeka Golden Giants this summer... Faulkner has two wins this season, including one on Thursday against Valley Center when he allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work.

Sierra Baseball League
Mike Kindel and Justin Lindsey are playing for the San Luis Obispo Blues... Kindel is hitless in three at-bats, but has scored a run after drawing a hit-by-pitch Sunday against Santa Barbara.

Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association
Kayvon Bahramzadeh and Jake Brown are scheduled to play for the Palm Springs Power, but neither has played this summer.

Walter Johnson League
Sophomore-to-be Robert Hawkins is the lone Wildcat playing for the Salina Blue Jays, which was swept in a Sunday doubleheader by Topeka... Hawkins pitched one inning in the first game of the twin bill.

K-State Pros
Drew Biery: After being selected the Northwest League Player of the Year in 2009, Biery was sent to High A San Jose to begin the 2010 season... A 22nd round draft pick by San Francisco last season, Biery is hitting .262 with five doubles, one triple, six homers and 30 RBI in 54 games... The infielder recorded two hits, including a solo home run, on Wednesday against Modesto... The Giants lead the California League North Division with a 40-24 record, five games ahead of Modesto.

Justin Bloxom: Bloxom, an 11th-round pick of the Washington Nationals in last year's draft, is hitting .305 with 21 doubles, three triples, one homer and 33 RBI in 61 games for the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League... He is tied for seventh in the league in average, while he ranks fourth in both hits (73) and doubles... Over the last five games, Bloxom has gone 7-for-19 with four doubles, a home run and three RBI at Delmarva and against Charleston... The Suns are third in the northern division at 31-32, six games back of first-place Lakewood.

Adam Cowart: Cowart is entering his fifth season of professional baseball and his second as a member of the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball... In six starts this season, Cowart holds a 2-2 record and a 3.89 ERA... Last Thursday against Sioux Falls, Cowart took the loss despite allowing just three runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work.

Eric Eymann: A shortstop in the Cincinnati Reds organization, Eymann is in his third season in Double A, including his second as a member of the Carolina Mudcats... Eymann, who has seen time at both corner infield positions, is hitting .254 with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 25 RBI... Against Huntsville on Friday, Eymann went 1-for-2 with his first triple of the season... Eymann's Mudcats are fifth in the Southern League North Division with a 27-36 record.

Jared Goedert: After hitting .325 with 14 doubles, seven homers and 32 RBI in 44 games at Double A Akron, Goedert was called up to Triple A Columbus on June 4... A 2006 draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, Goedert received the promotion after recording a 21-game hitting streak, just one shy of the Aero record... He was tied for second in the Eastern Division in average before the promotion, while he also ranked seventh in slugging percentage (.540) and OPS (.922)... In Triple A, Goedert is hitting 10-for-26 (.385) with six doubles, one home run and four RBI in seven games for the Clippers... In his last three games, the Concordia, Kan., product is hitting 5-for-11 with three doubles, a homer and four RBI... That featured a two-hit game with a double, a home run and three RBI on Friday against Rochester... The Clippers lead the west division with a 39-26 mark, the second-best record in the International League.

Lance Hoge: Hoge, a 2009 draftee of the New York Mets, has made 16 relief appearances for the Savannah Sand Gnats of the South Atlantic League... Hoge, who saw action in five contests for Savannah last season, is 2-0 with a 4.22 ERA and one save in 2010... The left-hander has struck out 32 batters in 32.0 innings, as opposed to just six walks... His last appearance came at Greensboro on Friday when he allowed one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts in three innings of work... The Sand Gnats are a game back of first place in the southern division with a 37-26 mark.

Ben Hornbeck: A 2008 draft pick of the Oakland Athletics, Hornbeck began the season at Double A Midland, going 2-3 with a 5.87 ERA and one save in eight games, including seven starts... On May 22, the left-hander was sent to High A Stockton, the same team as another former Wildcat, Justin Murray... Hornbeck has made five starts for the Ports, holding a 1-1 record and a 3.16 ERA... On Sunday against Modesto, Hornbeck took a no decision after allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work... The Ports are fourth in the south division of the California League with a 29-35 record.

Trevor Hurley: Hurley, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, has been dominant as the closer for the for Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League... In 19 appearances this season, Hurley is 0-1, but holds a 1.78 ERA and has collected seven saves... He is tied for sixth in the league in saves, while his ERA would rank fourth if he had pitched the required minimum of innings... Hurley, who was recently named a 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star, has allowed just six earned runs in 30.1 innings pitched, but three of those came against the right-hander last Tuesday against Lexington... Hurley was able to bounce back on Friday as he picked up his seventh save of the season against Augusta, striking out three of the four batters he faced... The Crawdads are second in the southern division with a 36-27 record, just one game back of Lakewood.

A.J. Morris: A fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals last season, Morris is a starter for the High A Potomac Nationals of the Carolina League... The right-hander holds a 1-2 record and a 3.91 ERA in 10 starts, but has not pitched since June 3 when he threw four no-hit innings, allowing an unearned run with three walks and two strikeouts at Wilmington... Potomac is third in the northern division at 28-36.

Justin Murray: A reliever for most of his career, Murray has started 11 games this season for High A Stockton... Murray, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, is 5-3 with a 3.61 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 62.1 innings... He is tied for 10th in the California League in wins and is 13th in ERA... On Thursday against Bakersfield, Murray picked up the win after throwing 5.1 shutout innings, allowing just five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts... That came on the heels of a seven-strikeout performance on June 5 at Visalia... The Ports are fourth in the south division with a 29-35 mark.

Nate Tenbrink: A seventh-round selection by the Seattle Mariners in 2008, Tenbrink began the season at High A High Desert... In 43 games, the third baseman hit .379 with 10 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 42 RBI and 14 steals... That prompted the first in-season promotion of his career as he was called up to Double A West Tennessee on May 26... His High A average is still second in the California League, while he also remains second in the league in on-base percentage (.452), slugging percentage (.649) and OPS (1.101), tied for eighth in triples and homers, tied for ninth in RBI and tied for 10th in steals... The Olathe, Kan., native played in two games for the Diamond Jaxx, scoring a run with a walk in two at-bats on May 26 before being hit in the head by a pitch on May 27... Tenbrink has been on the disabled list since that hit-by-pitch... The Diamond Jaxx hold a 36-26 record, 1.5 games back of Tennessee for first place in the south division of the Southern League.

Carlos Torres: The latest former Wildcat to play in the Major Leagues, Torres is 4-5 with a 3.46 ERA in 12 starts for Triple A Charlotte... The right-hander is second in the International League in innings pitched (78.0), fourth in strikeouts (76) and tied for 12th in ERA... A 2004 draft pick by the Chicago White Sox, Torres has won International League Pitcher of the Week honors on two occasions this year, including after his win on June 5 against Lehigh Valley when he allowed just one run on one hit in 6.1 innings of work... His last start came on Thursday when he took a no decision after allowing two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre... Charlotte is third in the south division with a 28-37 record.

Byron Wiley: Wiley, a 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds in 2008, began the season with the Reds' Low A affiliate, Dayton... In 19 games for the Dragons, Wiley held a .209 average with two doubles, four home runs and nine RBI... He was called up to High A Lynchburg, where he saw time in 13 games as he compiled a .205 average with a homer and two RBI before being released by the organization... Wiley was quickly signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks and assigned to High A Visalia of the California League... Wiley has played eight games for the Rawhide, going 9-for-31 (.290) with a home run and six RBI... The outfielder recorded three-straight two-hit games last week, which included a homer and two RBI against Lancaster on Wednesday... The Rawhide are third in the north division with an even 32-32 record.

Note: Members of the 2010 draft class from Kansas State have either not yet signed contracts or have not been assigned to a minor league team.
