MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.
California Collegiate League
Senior-to-be Wade Hinkle and future junior Tanner Witt began their summer season with the San Luis Obispo Blues with five games last week… Each had a three-hit contest as Hinkle went 3-for-4 with a RBI against the Orange County Pioneers on Thursday… Witt followed Hinkle by going 3-for-4 with a RBI and two steals on Friday at Santa Barbara… Witt also drove in three runs, going 1-for-4, on Saturday… Witt is hitting .375 (6-for-16) with five RBI in five games and is 3-for-3 in stolen bases… Hinkle is right behind him at .353 (6-for-17) with one RBI… The Blues are 8-4 this summer.
Cape Cod Baseball League
Sophomore-to-be Jared King played his first eight games of the summer last week for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League… The outfielder recorded two hits in 19 at-bats (.105) during the week… He picked up his first hit on Tuesday, a RBI double against Bourne… He then went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI Saturday against Yarmouth-Dennis and drove in another run on Sunday at Hawrich… Falmouth is fifth in the western division with a 2-8 record.
Jayhawk Baseball League
Sophomores-to-be Ross Kivett and Jared Moore are playing for the Liberal Bee Jays… Through games played on Thursday, Kivett was 1-for-7 and Moore had yet to pitch… The Bee Jays are 13-4 this summer, including a 5-4 mark in Jayhawk League play to sit in fourth.
Perfect Game Collegiate League
A 2012 senior, Dan Klein hit a pair of two-RBI doubles in two wins last week for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles… His first two-RBI hit of the week came Wednesday at Cooperstown in a 7-5 win, and he came back with another two-run double in a 6-2 victory over Amsterdam on Saturday… In four games this summer, Klein is hitting .214 (3-for-14) with two doubles and four RBI… Glens Falls is 6-2 this summer to lead the East Division of the Perfect Game Collegiate League.
Texas Collegiate League
Junior-to-be Ryan Moore is scheduled to play for the East Texas PumpJacks of the Texas Collegiate League this summer… The PumpJacks are third in the league with an 8-8 record.
Topeka Golden Giants
Two K-State sophomore-to-be pitchers – Gerardo Esquivel and Johnny Fasola – had solid weeks for the Topeka Golden Giants… Esquivel allowed just one hit in five shutout innings to earn the win on Wednesday against the Midwest Bruins… Fasola followed against the Bruins with a scoreless eighth, while he also allowed just one run in four innings on Friday against the Natural Baseball Academy… Sophomore catcher Blair DeBord jumpstarted Topeka’s week on Monday with a three-run homer in the first inning against the Milgram Mustangs in a game the Golden Giants won, 11-1… In eight games this summer, DeBord is hitting .413 (12-for-29) with four doubles, a triple, a home run and 11 RBI… Esquivel has not allowed an earned run in two appearances with four walks and seven strikeouts… Shane Conlon is also playing for Topeka as he is hitting .363 (8-for-22) with a double a two RBI.
Walter Johnson Baseball League
Sophomores-to-be Blake Freeman, Mitch Meyer and Adam Sonabend are playing for the Salina Blue Jays of the Walter Johnson Baseball League… Updated statistics for the Blue Jays are not available.
West Coast Collegiate League
Jake Doller, Matt Giller and Chase Graskewicz are playing for the Cowlitz Black Bears of the West Coast League… Doller pitched in two games last week, the first on Tuesday against Wenatchee as he allowed a run on two walks in one inning, but he also fanned two batters in the frame… He then took the loss on Sunday at Kelowna when he surrendered a run on two hits with two walks in 0.2 innings… Giller and Graskewicz have yet to play in a game this summer… The Black Bears are 4-8 to sit fifth in the west division.
James Allen (Rookie: Billings/Cincinnati): A seventh-round draft pick this season by Cincinnati, Allen has been assigned to the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League… The Mustangs begin their season Monday night in the first of four games against Great Falls.
Drew Biery (Double A: Richmond/San Francisco): After beginning the year on the disabled list, Biery played in 19 games for Low A Augusta of the South Atlantic League, hitting .280 with three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI before being promoted to Double A Richmond of the Eastern League… A 2009 draft pick by San Francisco, Biery was 7-for-32 (.219) with a double and four RBI in 10 games in Double A before being placed on the 7-Day Disabled List on June 11… Biery remains on the DL… Richmond is 34-34 this season to tie for third in the western division, five games back of division-leader Harrisburg.
Justin Bloxom (High A: Potomac/Washington): Bloxom, a 2009 draft pick by the Washington Nationals, had a pair of multi-hit games last week to end the first half of the regular season… On Wednesday against Myrtle Beach, the third baseman went 3-for-5 with a double and a game-winning solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning… The homer came off former Wildcat teammate Trevor Hurley, who had not allowed a hit against the first seven batters he faced in the game… Bloxom went 2-for-4 against Salem on Saturday… Bloxom ended the first half at .257 (39-for-152) with 10 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 20 RBI in 42 games… Potomac finished the first half fourth in the northern division at 29-40.
Jared Goedert (Triple A: Columbus/Cleveland): Goedert, a member of the 40-man roster for the Cleveland Indians, had three hits last week for Triple A Columbus… A 2006 draft pick by the Indians, he had a base hit at Buffalo on both Tuesday and Wednesday before a 1-for-4 contest Sunday at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre… In 19 games with the Clippers, Goedert is hitting .227 (15-for-66) with four doubles, three home runs and eight RBI… Columbus leads the International League West Division with a 47-23 record, 6.5 games ahead of second-place Louisville.
Ben Hornbeck (Double A: Midland/Oakland): A 2008 draft pick by Oakland, Hornbeck has seen time in three different levels as he began his season at High A Stockton and moved to Triple A Sacramento… The left-hander now resides at Double A Midland… His first outing with the RockHounds came on Wednesday when he pitched two innings of relief against Frisco, allowing three runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts… He rebounded Saturday at San Antonio by tossing 0.2 scoreless innings with a hit and two strikeouts… Hornbeck holds a combined 1-0 record and a 2.11 ERA with six walks and 27 strikeouts this season in all three levels… Midland is 26-42 to sit third in the first half of the Texas League South Division standings.
Kyle Hunter (Rookie: Pulaski/Seattle): After being picked in the 31st round of this year’s draft by Seattle and signing with the Mariners, Hunter was assigned to the Pulaski Mariners of the Rookie Appalachian League… Pulaski gets its season underway on Tuesday as it hosts Danville in a three-game series.
Trevor Hurley (High A: Myrtle Beach/Texas): Hurley, a 2008 draft pick by Texas, earned a win and took a loss in two outings last week for High A Myrtle Beach… On Wednesday at Potomac, he gave up a walk-off home run to former teammate Justin Bloxom… He had not allowed a hit in his first two innings of the appearance with three strikeouts before Bloxom’s homer… On Sunday against Frederick, the right-hander allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings, but he picked up the win as the Pelicans scored four runs in the eighth inning for an 8-5 win, which clinched the first half division title… In 19 appearances this season, Hurley is 1-2 with a 2.52 ERA and four saves… The right-hander has allowed 11 walks and struck out 32 batters in 25.0 innings of work… Myrtle Beach won the southern division first-half title with a 40-29 mark, two games ahead of Kinston.
Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): Jurica, a third-round draft pick by San Francisco in 2010, has spent the 2011 season with High A San Jose of the California League… The shortstop is hitting .239 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI, but was placed on the disabled list on June 12 and remains on the DL… San Jose took home the north division first-half championship with a 50-19 record, finishing 12.5 games ahead of second-place Stockton… It was the second time in club history that the Giants won 50 games in the first half.
Jason King (Class A Short-Season: Connecticut/Detroit): A fourth-round selection by Detroit in the 2011 draft, King has begun his professional career 4-for-13 (.308) with a double and a triple in three games for the Connecticut Tigers of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… He went 1-for-4 with a double in the season-opener on Friday against Lowell… After another 1-for-4 contest Saturday, the third baseman was 2-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored on Sunday, helping the Tigers take the rubber match against the Spinners… King has four runs scored through three games, which is tied for the league lead… Connecticut is 2-1 to tie for first with Vermont in the Stedler Division.
Evan Marshall (Class A Short-Season: Yakima/Arizona): Marshall, a fourth-round pick by Arizona in this year’s draft, has pitched in one game for the Yakima Bears of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League… The right-hander pitched a scoreless eighth inning on Saturday at Vancouver, working around a bases-loaded situation after allowing two base hits and a walk… The Mustangs went on to win the game, 6-5, in 12 innings… Billings is 1-2 through one series, tied for second with Boise and Tri-City in the east division.
Nick Martini (Class A Short-Season Batavia/St. Louis): Martini was assigned to the Batavia Muckdogs of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League after being selected in the seventh round of the 2011 draft by St. Louis… The outfielder is 4-for-11 (.364) through three games… He began his career on Friday by going 1-for-4 against Auburn and came back with a 3-for-5 outing and a run scored Saturday against the Doubledays… Martini was 0-for-2 on Sunday, but drew three walks and scored once… His three walks during the first weekend are tied for fourth in the league… Batavia went 1-2 over the weekend and is tied for fourth in the Pinckney Division.
A.J. Morris (High A Daytona Beach/Chicago NL): Morris, who was a fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals in 2009 and traded to the Chicago Cubs during the offseason, has not pitched this season as he is currently rehabbing from offseason surgery.
Adam Muenster (Rookie Billings/Cincinnati): A 2010 draft pick by Cincinnati, Muenster was assigned to the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League, joining former Wildcat teammate James Allen… The Mustangs begin their season Monday night.
Justin Murray (Wichita Wingnuts): Murray took the loss in his only start of the week for the Wichita Wingnuts on Thursday at Amarillo… The right-hander allowed eight runs on 11 hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work… A 2008 draft choice by Oakland who signed with Wichita on May 27, Murray has started four games for the Wingnuts, compiling a 2-1 record and a 5.47 ERA with nine walks and 36 strikeouts in 24.2 innings… Wichita leads the Central Division of the American Association of Independent Baseball with a 20-16 record, a half game ahead of second place Gary SouthShore.
Nate Tenbrink (Double A Jackson/Seattle): Tenbrink, a seventh-round selection by the Seattle Mariners in 2008, had a pair of extra-base hits last week for Double A Jackson… He went 1-for-3 with a double on Wednesday against Carolina, and he followed that up with a solo home run against the Mudcats on Thursday… He also singled and stole a base in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader… In 59 games this season, Tenbrink is hitting .216 (42-for-194) with nine doubles, six triples, six home runs, 22 RBI and seven steals… The third baseman ranks fourth in the league in triples and is tied for seventh in walks (32)… The Generals concluded the first half of the Southern League with a 38-32 record to finish second in the north division, five games back of first-place Tennessee.
Carlos Torres (Nippon Japanese League/Yomiuri Giants): A former pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, Torres signed with the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Japanese League during the offseason… The right-hander has seen time in three games for the Giants, holding a 0-1 record and an 8.16 ERA, allowing 13 earned runs on 15 hits with nine walks and nine strikeouts in 14.1 innings… The Giants are in third place in the Central League with a 22-26-2 record, five games back of first-place Yakult.
