MANHATTAN, Kan. - Each Monday throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes a look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.
Alaska Baseball League
Junior-to-be Matt Applegate took the win in a start for the Mat-Su Miners against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Tuesday... The right-hander tossed eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts... After throwing two scoreless innings the week prior, Applegate holds a 1.40 ERA and has limited opponents to a .206 batting average... Another future junior, James Allen picked up the save last Monday against the AIA Fire as he allowed one hit with a walk and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings... On Wednesday, the right-hander suffered the loss after allowing two runs (one unearned) on four hits in two innings pitched against the Alaska Goldpanners... Allen is 0-2 this summer with a 3.94 ERA ... The Mat-Su Miners are coached by former K-State volunteer assistant coach Craig Ringe.
California Collegiate League
In six games last week for the San Luis Obispo Blues, junior-to-be Mike Kindel went 9-for-25 (.360) with two doubles, a triple, four RBI and five runs scored... On Tuesday against the Conejo Oaks, the outfielder went 2-for-5 with three RBI, two of which came on a double... He also went 2-for-3 with a walk, a steal and two runs scored on Sunday at Team Vegas... Justin Lindsey started the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday against Team Vegas, allowing one run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts in three innings of work... The Blues are 6-7 this season.
Cape Cod Baseball League
Nick Martini, who was recently invited to the USA Baseball National Collegiate Team Trials, has played in seven games for the Falmouth Commodores... The outfielder has started the season 3-for-22 with a double, five walks and three steals... In the first game of a Saturday doubleheader against Brewster, Martini went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and three steals... The Commodores are tied for the western division lead with a 4-3 record.
Central Plains Baseball League
The Junction City Generals are fielding four K-State freshmen from this past season in Jake Doller (pitcher), Chase Graskewicz (catcher), Ryan Moore (outfielder) and Tyler Sturges (pitcher), as well as a trio of signees in Johnny Fasola (pitcher/infielder), Shawn Lewick (pitcher) and Jared King (infielder)... Fasoa pitched a scoreless ninth inning on Friday against the Ozark Generals to earn the win, while Doller took the win on Saturday against Ozark... Junction City, which started the season 0-5, has won five of its last six games... Updated player stats for the Generals were not available... Junction City opens a three-game homestand on Thursday against Hutchinson before taking on Lindsborg Friday and Saturday.
Coastal Plain League
Junior-to-be Kent Urban is hitting 3-for-21 (.143) with a double and two RBI in five games with the Petersburg Generals... On Friday against Outter Banks, the first basemen went 2-for-4 with a RBI before connecting on a run-scoring double on Sunday against Edenton... Urban is joined by fellow Wildcat Kyle Hunter, who has yet to pitch for the Generals this summer... Petersburg is fifth in the first half of the north division standings at 6-16.
Jayhawk Baseball League
Junior-to-be Matt Giller went 1-for-10 in a three-game weekend series against Hays, but drove in five runs... In the first inning on Friday, Giller hit a first-inning three-run homer and came back in the second inning with a RBI ground out... He followed that with a 0-for-2 day on Saturday, but drove in another run... Sophomore-to-be Blair DeBord went 1-for-3 with a walk on Saturday and recorded a pinch-hit RBI single on Sunday... Updated statistics for the Broncos were not available... Sophomore-to-be Nick Cocking is playing for the Liberal Bee Jays, but had not seen action through Thursday.
Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association
Kayvon Bahramzadeh and Jake Brown are scheduled to play for the Palm Springs Power this summer... Updated statistics for the Power were not available.
Topeka Golden Giants (Independent)
Right-handed pitcher Brandon Faulkner had a great week for the Topeka Golden Giants in two starts... On Tuesday, Faulkner took a no decision against the Sedalia Bombers after allowing one run on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts in six innings... He came back to earn the win in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday against the Springfield Generals, throwing a seven-inning complete game shutout, allowing five hits with a walk and five strikeouts... That moved his season record to 3-0... Sophomore-to-be Robert Hawkins earned the save in the second game of a doubleheader against the Denver Cougars on Saturday... Another sophomore-to-be, Tanner Witt, drove in runs on both Tuesday and Sunday... Complete individual statistics for the Golden Giants were not available.
Drew Biery: Biery, a 22nd round draft pick by San Francisco in 2009, was 6-for-16 (.375) with a double and six RBI in five games last week to raise his season average seven points to .270... He had a pair of two-hit, two-RBI games to lead the San Jose Giants at Lake Elsinore on Thursday and Saturday... San Jose won the first half of the California League North Division with a 45-25 record, eight games ahead of second place Modesto.
Justin Bloxom: An 11th-round pick of the Washington Nationals last year, Bloxom hit a blistering .548 (17-for-31) with three doubles, a triple, four home runs and 17 RBI in seven games last week for the Hagerstown Suns... He raised his average 28 points during the week to .333, which is third in the South Atlantic League... Bloxom hit homers in three-straight games to start the week, including one in a 4-for-4 effort with a double and three RBI at Ashville on Wednesday... He added another four-hit game to his resume on Friday at West Virginia with a triple and another three RBI... That was the first of a three-game streak with three RBI to close out the week... The designated hitter is also in the midst of a 12-game hitting streak as his last hitless game was on June 6... Bloxom ranks second in the league in hits (90), doubles (24) and total bases (137), while he is tied for second in RBI (50), fourth in runs scored (48), fifth in OPS (.85), sixth in slugging percentage (.507) and tied for 10th in on-base percentage (.378)... The Suns are third in the northern division at 36-34, six games back of first-place Lakewood.
Adam Cowart: Cowart, in his fifth season of professional baseball and his second with the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, took the loss in his only start last week... On Tuesday at Sioux Falls, Cowart allowed three runs (one unearned) on eight hits with two walks in five innings... Cowart fell to 2-3 on the year, but lowered his ERA to 3.86... He ranks seventh in the league in ERA among pitchers with seven or more starts... Wichita is fifth in the north division with a 14-21 record.
Eric Eymann: Eymann, a shortstop in the Cincinnati Reds organization, was 7-for-22 (.318) with two doubles, a homer and three RBI last week for Double A Carolina... Eymann, who is hitting .260 in 61 games this season, finished out the week on a strong note as he went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI against Mississippi on Sunday... The Mudcats finished the first half fifth in the north division with a 30-39 record.
Jared Goedert: Goedert continues to swing a hot bat for Triple A Columbus after receiving a promotion from Double A Akron on June 4... The third baseman went 8-for-22 (.364) with a double, three home runs and five RBI in six games last week... On Monday at Norfolk, Goedert hit a solo home run before going 3-for-5 with another homer and two RBI against the Tides on Tuesday... He also recorded a pair of two-hit games on Friday and Saturday at Pawtucket... His .375 batting average would rank second in the International League if he met the required minimum of at-bats... A 2006 draft pick by Cleveland, Goedert was hitting .325 with 14 doubles, seven homers and 32 RBI in 44 games in Double A before being called up... He still ranks highly in the Eastern League (Double A) in batting average (second), slugging percentage (.540; sixth) and OPS (.922; second)... Columbus leads the International League West Division with a 41-29 mark, two games ahead of second place Toledo.
Lance Hoge: A 2009 draftee of the New York Mets, Hoge tossed three scoreless innings in his only appearance of the week on Sunday at Augusta... The left-hander allowed two hits and struck out a batter to earn the hold in a 9-5 Savannah win that clinched the first-half division championship by a game over Augusta... The Sand Gnats finished the first half with a 42-28 record... In 17 appearances this season, Hoge is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 35 innings, while he has struck out 33 batters as opposed to six walks.
Ben Hornbeck: In his only start of the week, Hornbeck, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings against Visalia on Friday... The left-hander allowed just one walk and struck out five batters, but the Ports did not score a run with Hornbeck on the mound... It was Hornbeck's second loss since moving from Double A Midland to High A Stockton on May 22... In six starts in High A, Hornbeck is 1-2 with a 3.66 ERA in 32 innings, while he has allowed 12 walks and struck out 37 batters... His ERA would rank 13th in the league if he had pitched the required minimum of innings... Stockton finished the first half fourth in the California League North Division at 31-39.
Trevor Hurley: Hurley, a 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star as a closer for the Hickory Crawdads, saw action in two games last week... A 2008 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Hurley tossed a hitless inning with a strikeout on Wednesday against West Virginia before allowing an unearned run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout on Saturday against Greenville... In 21 appearances this season, Hurley is 0-1, but holds a 1.67 ERA and has collected seven saves... He is tied for eighth in the league in saves, while his ERA would rank third if he had pitched the required minimum of innings... Hurley has allowed just six earned runs in 32.1 innings pitched... The Crawdads finished the first half second in the northern division, two games back of first-half division champion Lakewood... Hurley will participate in the 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star Game on Tuesday in Greenville, S.C.
Carter Jurica: A third-round draft selection by the San Francisco Giants this season, Jurica began his professional career on Friday night for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League... In two games, Jurica is hitless in six at-bats, but drew a walk and scored a run against Everett on Saturday... The Volcanoes have started the young season 0-3 and begin a five-game series at Boise on Monday.
A.J. Morris: Morris, a fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals in 2009, holds a 1-2 record and a 3.91 ERA in 10 starts for the Potomac Nationals, but has not pitched since June 3 when he threw four no-hit innings before a line drive ricocheted off his calf... Potomac concluded the first half third in the northern division at 31-39.
Adam Muenster: Muenster, a 29th-round draft choice by Cincinnati in this year's draft, begins his professional career Monday for the AZL Reds of the Rookie Arizona League.
Justin Murray: After going 6-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 13 games, including 12 starts, at High A Stockton, Murray was promoted to Double A Midland of the Texas League last Friday... The right-hander started on Sunday at San Antonio, allowing five runs on eight hits with four walks and a strikeout in four innings of work... Murray took a no decision as the RockHounds scored six runs in the sixth innings to earn a come-from-behind 8-5 victory... Murray, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, is still tied for seventh in the California League (High A) in wins, while he is tied for third in complete games (1) and is 14th in ERA... Midland is 34-34 to sit third in the Texas League South Division.
Nate Tenbrink: After coming back from the seven-day disabled list this past week, Tenbrink recorded a hit in five-straight games for Double A West Tennessee until going 0-for-2 on Saturday... A seventh-round selection by Seattle in 2008, Tenbrink hit a triple and drove in two runs in the second game of a Wednesday doubleheader for the Diamond Jaxx against Chattanooga before hitting a two-run homer against the Lookouts on Friday... Tenbrink began the season at High A High Desert, hitting .379 with 10 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 42 RBI and 14 steals in 43 games before being promoted to Double A on May 26... His High A average still ranks second in the California League, while he is also second in on-base percentage (.449) and slugging percentage (.646), third in OPS (1.095) and tied for 10th in both triples (5) and home runs (9)... In eight games for West Tenn, Tenbrink is hitting .250 (5-for-20) with a triple, a homer and four RBI... The Diamond Jaxx finished the first half second on the Southern League North Division, three games back of first-half division winner Tennessee.
Carlos Torres: Torres, the latest former Wildcat to play in the Major Leagues, took a no decision in his only start of the week on Tuesday for the Charlotte Knights of the International League, despite allowing just one earned run on five hits in 5.2 innings... A 2004 draft pick by the Chicago White Sox, Torres surrendered two unearned runs, while walking four and striking out four in 5.2 innings of work... The right-hander, who is 4-5 with a 3.33 ERA in 13 starts for Triple A Charlotte, is fifth in the International League in ERA among pitchers with 13 or more starts... He also ranks fourth in both innings pitched (83.2) and strikeouts (80)... Charlotte is second in the south division with a 33-38 record.
Byron Wiley: A 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds in 2008 but a free agent signee by Arizona this season, Wiley played in just one game last week for the Visalia Rawhide of the California League... The outfielder went 1-for-4 with a RBI against Modesto on Monday... In nine games this season for Visalia, Wiley is hitting .286 (10-for-35) with a homer and seven RBI... The Rawhide finished the first half third in the north division at 37-33, but finished the first half on a five-game winning streak.
