K-State Summer Baseball Update: June 23

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Each Monday, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

 

Central Plains Baseball League

Future seniors Lance Hoge (pitcher) and Rob Vaughn (catcher), junior Adam Muenster (infield), sophomore Justin Lindsey (pitcher) and incoming freshman Nick Martini (outfielder) are playing with the Junction City Generals this summer... Hoge is 0-1 in two appearances both starts but holds an ERA of 0.00 as all seven runs he’s allowed have been unearned... Vaughn is hitting .257 (9-for-35) with three doubles, one home run and six RBI... Muenster is .226 (7-for-31) this summer with one double and two runs driven in... Lindsey, like Hoge, is also 0-1 with a low ERA of 1.84 in 14.2 innings pitched... He has also recorded 17 strikeouts as opposed to just five walks... Martini, an incoming freshman from Crystal Lake, Ill., is hitting .272 (6-for-22) with two RBI and an on-base percentage of .464.


Coastal Plain League

The Fayetteville (N.C.) Swamp Dogs, with sophomores-to-be Carter Jurica and Jason King, are 10-11 this season... Jurica is hitting .269 (18-for-67) with three doubles, 10 RBI and is 4-for-6 in stolen base attempts... In Fayetteville’s 32-5 blasting of Wilmington on June 14, Jurica was 5-for-7 with six RBI and three runs scored... King, who is playing third base after starting the final 24 games for Kansas State in right field, is hitting .265 (18-for-68) with five doubles, one triple, one home run and eight RBI... King also had a great day against Wilmington on June 14 as he was 4-for-6 with three RBI, two doubles and three runs scored.

 

Jayhawk Baseball League

Thomas Rooke, pitching for the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons, is 0-1 on the season in four appearances, including two starts for the 11-4 Griffons... The sophomore-to-be has a 4.76 ERA and has struck out 13 batters in 11.1 innings... In his first start against Dodge City, Rooke gave up three runs on seven his in four innings... In his next start against Derby on June 13, the Spring, Texas, native was saddled with the loss as he allowed another three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings, but did strike out five batters... Daniel Dellasega, also playing for the Nevada Griffins, is hitting .267 (4-for-15) with two doubles and two RBI in six games... Jordan Cruz is slated to join the Derby Twins later in the summer.

 

M.I.N.K. League

Drew Biery, playing for the Topeka Golden Giants, is hitting .275 (11-for-40) with three doubles, two home runs and six RBI in 10 games.


Texas
Collegiate League

Junior-to-be Justin Bloxom, playing for the McKinney Marshalls, is hitting .184 (7-for-38) with one double, one home run and five RBI... Against Brazos Valley on Sunday, Bloxom went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in an 11-7 loss... Justin Murray, who was taken in the 2008 MLB Draft but has yet to sign, joined the East Texas Pump Jacks on Saturday.

 

West Coast Collegiate League

Senior-to-be Dane Yelovich is the fourth-leading hitter for the Moses Lake Pirates in the West Coast Collegiate League, hitting .303 (10-for-33) with three doubles and three RBI... He is also 5-for-7 in stolen base attempts and is perfect in all 17 fielding attempts... His best game this season came against Bellingham where he went 3-for-3 with a double and a stolen base.

 

2008 Draft Picks

Trevor Hurley: In two appearances for the Spokane Indians in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, Hurley has no record with a 9.00 ERA, allowing two runs on two hits including a home run to former teammate Nate Tenbrink in 2.0 innings... A 22nd-round pick of the Texas Rangers, Hurley is limiting opponents to a .250 batting average.

 

Nate Tenbrink: Playing for the Everett Aqua Sox in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, Tenbrink is hitting .217 (5-for-23) with one home run, five RBI and four stolen bases... A seventh-round pick by the Seattle Mariners, Tenbrink hit is first professional home run on June 20 against Spokane, ironically coming off Hurley.

 

Byron Wiley: A 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Wiley is playing for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League... In his only game played, Wiley went 1-for-4 with a triple in a 4-3 loss to Great Falls on Saturday.

 

Ben Hornbeck (32nd round, Oakland Athletics) has signed with the A’s, but has not been assigned to a minor league team. Daniel Edwards (25th round, Philadelphia Phillies) and Justin Murray (29th round, Oakland Athletics) have not signed.

 

Other K-State Pros

Adam Cowart: Pitching for Double A Connecticut in the Eastern League, Cowart holds a 5-5 record with a 3.64 ERA in 81.2 innings pitched for the Defenders... Cowart, a 2006 draft pick by the San Francisco Giants, picked up the win on June 7 against Altoona, allowing just one run on six hits in 6.0 innings pitched, while striking out five batters.

 

Eric Eymann: A shortstop for Double A Chattanooga in the Southern League, Eymann is hitting a .306, which ranks 13th in the league... A 2005 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Eymann has recorded 20 doubles, one triple, two home runs and has drove in 36 runs... On Sunday against Carolina, Eymann went 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI in a 10-1 victory.

 

Jared Goedert: A 2006 draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, Goedert has seen action in 71 games for the Kinston Indians in the Class A Advanced Carolina League... Goedert is hitting .277 (76-for-274) with 15 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 41 RBI... On June 19 against Lynchburg, Goedert went 2-for-5 with one home run and four RBI in a 13-8 win.

 

Steve Murphy: A 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Murphy has played in 71 games this season for Double A Frisco in the Texas League... Murphy is the second-league hitter for the Roughriders at .290 (81-for-279) with 22 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs and 54 RBI... On Sunday’s 15-7 win against Corpus Christi, Murphy went 2-for-4 with a double, two walks and two runs scored.

 

Eli Rumler: Drafted in 2007 by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Rumler is hitting .228 with 10 doubles, one home run and 15 RBI for Class A South Bend in the Midwest League... On June 14 against the Dayton Dragons, Rumler went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in a 9-7 Silver Hawks win.

 

Carlos Torres: Torres, a 2004 draft pick by the Chicago White Sox, holds an 8-3 record for Double A Birmingham of the Southern League... His eight wins are tied for first in the league, while his 3.23 ERA is ninth in the league... Torres was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week after throwing eight shutout innings against Jacksonville on Saturday, limiting the Suns to six hits, while striking out five and walking three... Furthermore, in his last 10 games, Torres is 6-2 with a 2.40 ERA, allowing just 17 earned runs in 63.2 innings... During that span, Torres has struck out 53 batters, while walking just 15.
