Kansas State Summer Baseball Update: June 30

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Each Monday, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

Coastal Plain League

Sophomore-to-be Carter Jurica helped the Fayetteville (N.C.) Swap Dogs to a 4-2 record last week, improving their record to 14-13... Jurica went 4-for-22 with three RBI last week, which lowered his season average to .250 (22-for-88)... He also has three doubles, 13 RBI and is 5-for-7 in stolen bases... Jason King did not play last week due to injury.


Jayhawk Baseball League

Following last Monday’s game, the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons were 12-4, but stats have not been recently updated... Thomas Rooke is 0-1 on the season in four appearances, including two starts ... The sophomore-to-be has a 4.76 ERA and has struck out 13 batters in 11.1 innings... Daniel Dellasega, also playing for the Griffins, is hitting .235 (4-for-17) with two doubles and two RBI in seven games... Jordan Cruz is slated to join the Derby Twins later in the summer.


M.I.N.K. League

Drew Biery, playing for the Topeka Golden Giants, was hitting .295 (13-for-44) with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI through last Monday... Statistics for the Golden Giants have not been recently updated.

Collegiate League

The McKinney Marshalls, with junior-to-be Justin Bloxom, are on a six-game win streak and have ascended to the top of the TCL standings at 12-6... Bloxom is hitting .160 (8-for-50) with one double, two home runs and seven RBI... On Thursday against Coppell, Bloxom hit a two-run, game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings, where the Marshalls won in the 13th... Justin Murray, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics but has yet to sign with the club, joined the East Texas PumpJacks last week... In two starts, the Manhattan, Kan., native is 0-1 with a 7.15 ERA.


West Coast Collegiate League

Senior-to-be Dane Yelovich had an outstanding week for the Moses Lake Pirates in the West Coast Collegiate League, going 9-for-20 with one double and three RBI... He improved his average to a team-leading .358 (19-for-53) with four doubles and seven RBI... He is also 7-for-12 in stolen base attempts ... Against Corvallis on Saturday, Yelovich went 3-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and two stolen bases... He also went 2-for-5 with two RBI on Tuesday against Wenatchee.


Central Plains Baseball League

Future seniors Lance Hoge (pitcher) and Rob Vaughn (catcher), junior Adam Muenster (infield), sophomore Justin Lindsey (pitcher) and incoming freshman Nick Martini (outfielder) are playing with the Junction City Generals this summer, but updated stats are not available.


2008 Draft Picks

Ben Hornbeck: A 32nd-round pick by the Oakland Athletics, Hornbeck was just recently assigned to the Vancouver Canadians in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, the same league as other Wildcat draftees Trevor Hurley and Nate Tenbrink... In two appearances, Hornbeck has pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, while walking one and striking out two.


Trevor Hurley: Hurley picked up his first professional victory last Monday as the right hander allowed just one earned run on four hits in 2.0 innings in Spokane’s 7-4 win at Eugene... Hurley, who’s Spokane Indians lead the Northwest League with a 9-4 record, is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 5.0 innings pitched, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts.


Nate Tenbrink: Tenbrink, playing for the Everett Aqua Sox in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, dropped his average after last week as he now sits at .204 (10-for-49) with two home runs and eight RBI... He hit his second professional home run on Thursday against Boise and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored the following night at Salem-Keizer... Everett is in third place in the Northwest League West Division at 5-8.


Byron Wiley: A 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Wiley is playing for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League... In his only game played, Wiley went 1-for-4 with a triple in a 4-3 loss to Great Falls on June 21.


Daniel Edwards (25th round, Philadelphia Phillies) and Justin Murray (29th round, Oakland Athletics) have not signed.


Other K-State Pros

Adam Cowart: Cowart went 1-1 last week for Double A Connecticut in the Eastern League... He took the victory on Sunday against the Binghamton Mets, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings...  Cowart holds a 6-6 record with a 4.25 ERA in 91.0 innings pitched for the 37-43 Defenders.


Eric Eymann: Double A Chattanooga shortstop Eric Eymann struggled last week as he dropped his average from.306 to .256 after going 5-for-26 during the week... A 2005 draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, Eymann has recorded 20 doubles, one triple, three home runs and has drove in 41 runs... Despite his recent struggles, Eymann hit a grand slam on Friday against Jacksonville.


Jared Goedert: Goedert went 1-for-12 in just four games last week, dropping his average to .269... A 2006 draft pick by the Cleveland Indians, Goedert has seen action in 75 games for the Kinston Indians in the Class A Advanced Carolina League and has recorded 15 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 42 RBI... His lone hit of the week was a solo home run against Frederick Thursday... Kinston is in second place in the Southern division at 43-36.


Steve Murphy: Also playing in just four games last week, Murphy went 3-for-15 with two doubles and two RBI... A 2005 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Murphy’s average for Double A Frisco is .283 (82-for-290) with 23 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs and 56 RBI... Against Corpus Christi last Monday, Murphy went 2-for-4 with one double and two runs scored.


Eli Rumler: Drafted in 2007 by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Rumler is hitting .218 with 13 doubles, one home run and 16 RBI for Class A South Bend in the Midwest League... Three of his five hits last week went for doubles, while he also drove in a run against Dayton on Tuesday.


Carlos Torres: Torres lost his only start last week as Class Double A Birmingham dropped a 4-0 decision to Mississippi on Friday... In his 5.0 innings pitched, Torres gave up two earned runs on five hits, but did strike out three batters... A 2004 draft pick by the Chicago White Sox, Torres holds an 8-4 record the Barons, who won the first half of the Southern League regular season... His eight wins are tied for first in the league, while his 3.25 ERA is 10th in the league... In 91.1 innings pitched this season, Torres has struck out 84 batters good for second in the league while he has issued just 24 walks.
