Kansas State Summer Baseball Update: July 5

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Each week throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

Alaska Baseball League
Matt Applegate, a senior for the 2012 season, has pitched in three games this summer for the Mat-Su Miners of the Alaska Baseball League… The right-hander is 2-0 with a save in three relief outings, surrendering just two hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4.2 scoreless innings… He picked up the win in his first appearance of the season on June 24 against Anchorage before earning the save the next day against the Glacier Pilots… Applegate also pitched two innings of relief on Thursday against Peninsula to earn the win, surrendering a hit and a walk while striking out one… The Miners are 12-7-1 this season, including a 10-5 mark in ABL play to lead the league.

California Collegiate League

Senior-to-be Wade Hinkle, a member of the San Luis Obispo Blues, was selected to play in the California Collegiate League All-Star Game, held July 13, in Glendale, Calif… Hinkle is joined on the Blues by future junior Tanner Witt… Hinkle had one hit last week, going 1-for-15 with a RBI against Menlo Park on Friday, while he also drove in a run on Wednesday against the SMV Packers… Witt, who was 3-for-16 in five games last week, was 1-for-4 on Wednesday against the Packers before going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI on Friday against Menlo Park… In 16 games this summer, Hinkle is hitting .232 (13-for-56) with four doubles and eight RBI… Witt is at .258 (16-for-62) with two doubles, 12 RBI and six steals in 17 games… The Blues, who went 5-1 last week, are 20-6 this summer, including a 13-6 mark in the California Collegiate League to sit atop the standings.

Cape Cod Baseball League
Jared King, a sophomore-to-be, had two hits in five games last week for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League… The outfielder went 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored last Monday against Yarmouth-Dennis and then was 1-for-4 with two RBI on Friday at Brewster… He also drew three walks on Saturday against Yarmouth-Dennis in four plate appearances… King is hitting .132 (5-for-38) with a double, nine walks and six RBI in 15 games this summer… The Commodores are 10-11 to sit in fourth in the western division.
 
Jayhawk Baseball League
Sophomores-to-be Jared Moore and Ross Kivett are playing for the Liberal Bee Jays, who are 22-7 overall, including a Jayhawk League-best 12-6 league record… Moore saw time in three games last week, combining to allow two runs in seven innings with nine strikeouts… On Thursday at Dodge City, the left-hander tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts to pick up the save… He also struck out four while giving up a run on Tuesday against Greeley… Kivett went 2-for-4 with a RBI against Greeley on Wednesday and doubled Saturday against Dodge City… Updated statistics for Liberal are not available… Through games played on June 27, Kivett was hitting .321 (9-for-28) with two doubles and six RBI, while Moore had allowed two earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Perfect Game Collegiate League
Mike Kindel and Dan Klein, seniors for the 2012 season, are playing for the Glens Falls Golden Eagles of the Perfect Game Collegiate League… Kindel went 3-for-16 last week, including a 1-for-4 outing with a solo home run against Mohawk Valley on Friday… He then went 2-for-3 on Saturday against Albany… Klein played in just two games last week, going hitless in six at-bats… The Golden Eagles lead the east division with a 13-6 record, three games ahead of second-place Amsterdam.

Texas Collegiate League
Ryan Moore played in three games last week for the East Texas Pump Jacks of the Texas Collegiate League... The junior-to-be was a defensive replacement last Monday against Alexandria before going 0-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch and a run scored Tuesday against the Aces… He also played this past Monday against Alexandria, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored… Moore is hitting .111 (1-for-9) in five games this summer… East Texas won the first-half league title with an 18-10 record.

Topeka Golden Giants
Three future sophomores – Gerardo Esquivel, Johnny Fasola and Blair DeBord – are playing for the Topeka Golden Giants… Esquivel was dominant in two starts last week... Last Monday against the Natural Baseball Academy, the right-hander walked two of the first three batters he faced before retiring the next 14 batters to take a no-hitter into the sixth… He allowed four runs that inning (two unearned) to take the loss, but only surrendered three hits… He came back a week later against Regal Plastic to throw a two-hit complete-game shutout, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning… DeBord recorded a RBI single last Monday and a RBI double this past Monday, while Fasola drove in a run on a sacrifice fly against Joplin on Sunday… Updated statistics for the Giants, who are 22-4 this season, are not available.

Walter Johnson Baseball League
Sophomores-to-be Blake Freeman, Mitch Meyer and Adam Sonabend are playing for the Salina Blue Jays of the Walter Johnson Baseball League… Updated statistics for the Blue Jays are not available… The Blue Jays are 11-10 this season, which is second in the north division.

West Coast Collegiate League
Matt Giller and Jake Doller are playing for the Cowlitz Black Bears, who lead the West Coast Collegiate League West Division with a 13-10 mark… Giller had three hits in five games last week Cowlitz, recording singles on Friday, Saturday and Sunday… He also drew a walk and scored in a 15-4 win over Portland on Sunday… Doller picked up the win against Portland, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts in three innings of work… In seven games with the Black Bears, Giller is hitting .154 (4-for-26) with a walk and four runs scored… Doller holds a 1-1 record in four outings, which spans 4.2 innings.

K-State Pros
James Allen (Rookie: Billings/Cincinnati): A seventh round pick this year by Cincinnati, Allen pitched in two games last week for the Billings Mustangs and picked up his first professional victory… The right-hander tossed two scoreless innings last Monday, allowing one hit with no walks and two strikeouts to earn the win at Missoula… He threw another two innings on Thursday against Helena, surrendering one run on three hits with two strikeouts… Billings is tied for the Pioneer League North Division lead with an 8-7 record.

Drew Biery (Double A: Richmond/San Francisco): Biery, a 2009 draft pick by San Francisco, remains on the 7-Day Disabled List for the Double A Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Eastern League… The third baseman was 7-for-32 (.219) with a double and four RBI in 10 games in Double A before being placed on the 7-Day Disabled List on June 11… Prior to his time in Double A, Biery played in 19 games for Low A Augusta of the South Atlantic League, hitting .280 with three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI.

Justin Bloxom (High A: Potomac/Washington): Bloxom went 9-for-32 with two doubles, a homer and nine RBI in eight games last week for the Potomac Nationals of the High A Carolina League… A 2009 draft pick by Washington, Bloxom had three two-hit games – last Monday at Kinston, Wednesday against Winston-Salem and Sunday against Wilmington – while he began the week by recording at least one RBI in seven-straight games… The Potomac Offensive Player of the Month during June, Bloxom had two RBI against the Blue Rocks on Saturday and Sunday… In 54 games, Bloxom is hitting .256 (51-for-199) with 12 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 29 RBI… Potomac is 6-6 in the second half, which is second in the northern division.

Jared Goedert (Triple A: Columbus/Cleveland): Goedert, a member of the 40-man roster for the Cleveland Indians, registered seven hits in eight games last week for Triple A Columbus of the International League… A 2006 draft pick by the Indians, Goedert went 3-for-4 with a solo home run on Tuesday against Toledo and also singled and drove in a run the next day against the Mud Hens… The third baseman is hitting .195 (22-for-113) with five doubles, four home runs and 11 RBI in 31 games for the Clippers… After recovering from an injury, Goedert played in eight games for Double A Akron of the Eastern League, hitting .276 (8-for-29) with two doubles, three homers and nine RBI… Columbus continues to lead the west division with a 57-28 record, 11.5 games ahead of second-place Louisville.

Ben Hornbeck (Double A: Midland/Oakland): A 2008 draft pick by Oakland, Hornbeck did not throw last week for Double A Midland of the Texas League… The left-hander has seen time at three different levels this year, pitching for both High A Stockton and Triple A Sacramento before joining the RockHounds… He holds a combined 1-0 record and a 3.22 ERA with seven walks and 30 strikeouts this season in all three levels… Midland is 6-5 in the second half to sit in third place in the south division.

Kyle Hunter (Rookie: Pulaski/Seattle): A 31st-round pick by Seattle this year, Hunter pitched twice out of the bullpen last week for the Pulaski Mariners of the Rookie Appalachian League… The left-hander threw three scoreless innings on Tuesday at Burlington, working around four hits and two walks with five strikeouts… He then surrendering a run on three hits in one inning on Sunday at Johnson City, but he collected another two strikeouts… In three relief outings, Hunter holds a 1.35 ERA with two walks and seven fanned batters… Pulaski is tied for the east division lead with a 9-5 record.

Trevor Hurley (High A: Myrtle Beach/Texas): Hurley, a 2008 draft pick by Texas, tossed a scoreless inning on Wednesday against Kinston with one strikeout for High A Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League… The right-hander is 1-2 with a 2.57 ERA and four saves in 21 games this season… He has allowed 11 walks and struck out 36 batters in 28.0 innings… Myrtle Beach, which won the southern division first-half title with a 40-29 mark, is 5-7 during the second half.

Carter Jurica (High A: San Jose/San Francisco): A third-round draft pick by San Francisco in 2010, Jurica was is hitting .239 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI before being placed on the disabled list on June 12, and the shortstop remains on the DL… San Jose, which took home the north division first-half championship with a 50-19 record, is 3-9 in the second half.

Jason King (Class A Short-Season: Connecticut/Detroit): A fourth-round selection by Detroit in the 2011 draft, King had a hit in five of his six games last week as he went 9-for-28 for the Connecticut Tigers of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… He had three two-hit games and a pair of two-RBI contests for the Tigers, beginning on Wednesday when he went 2-for-5 with two RBI against Vermont… Two days later, King was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBI against the Lake Monsters, while he also had two hits and drove in a run Sunday against Lowell… King is hitting .289 (17-for-57) with two doubles, two triples, one home run and eight RBI in 15 games… He is tied for fourth in the league in triples… The Tigers are 7-8 this season to sit third in the Stedler Division, a half-game back of Lowell for second place and 2.5 games behind division-leader Vermont.

Evan Marshall (Class A Short-Season: Yakima/Arizona): A member of the Yakima Bears of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League, Marshall pitched in two games last week and recorded his first professional save… Marshall, a fourth-round pick by Arizona this year, pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts on Tuesday at Spokane to earn the save… On Saturday against Boise, the right-hander allowed his first run of the season in one inning… Marshall holds a 1.29 ERA in six games this year, allowing one run in seven innings with one walk and five strikeouts… The Bears are 6-12 this year to sit fourth in the east division, four games back of a three-way tie for first.

Nick Martini (Class A Short-Season Batavia/St. Louis): Martini, a seventh-round selection by St. Louis in this year’s draft, had one hit in six games last week for the Batavia Muckdogs of the Class A Short-Season New York-Penn League… His lone hit of the week came on Tuesday at Jamestown… He also drew five walks during the week, including two last Monday at Jamestown and two on Saturday at Mahoning Valley, while he also had two RBI against the Scrappers… Martini is hitting .130 (7-for-54) with four RBI and 13 walks in 16 games this season… His 13 walks are tied for second in the league… The Muckdogs are 8-10 this season to sit fifth in the Pinckney Division.

A.J. Morris (High A Daytona Beach/Chicago NL): Morris, a fourth-round draft choice of Washington in 2009, was traded to the Chicago Cubs during the offseason and has not pitched this season as he is rehabbing from offseason surgery.

Adam Muenster (Rookie Billings/Cincinnati): A 2010 draft pick by Cincinnati, Muenster had three hits, including two extra-base hits, in four games last week for the Billings Mustangs of the Rookie Pioneer League… The second baseman was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI on Thursday against Helena… He also doubled against Missoula on Monday… Muenster is hitting .154 (4-for-26) with a double, a home run and three RBI in eight games… Billings is tied for the north division lead at 8-7.

Justin Murray (Wichita Wingnuts): Murray took the loss in his only start last week for the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Baseball… The right-hander allowed nine runs on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings against Kansas City on Friday… A 2008 draft choice by Oakland who signed with Wichita on May 27, Murray is 3-3 with a 6.64 ERA in seven starts for the Wingnuts… Wichita is second in the central division with a 27-23 record, three games back of first-place Gary SouthShore.

Nate Tenbrink (Double A Jackson/Seattle): A seventh-round selection in 2008 by Seattle, Tenbrink played in one game last week for Double A Jackson before being placed on the 7-Day Disabled List on Thursday… The third baseman was 1-for-2 with two walks last Monday at Montgomery… Tenbrink is hitting .218 (46-for-211) with nine doubles, six triples, six home runs and 25 RBI in 64 games for Jackson… He is tied for fourth in the Southern League in triples and tied for 10th in steals (11)…  Jackson, which finished the first half in second place in the north division, is 4-8 during the second half.

Carlos Torres (Nippon Japanese League/Yomiuri Giants): A former starting pitcher for the Chicago White Sox, Torres is playing for the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Japanese League after signing with the Giants during the offseason… The right-hander has seen time in three games for Yomiuri, holding a 0-1 record and an 8.16 ERA… Torres has spent most of his time pitching for the Giants Farm Team, holding a 6-2 record and a 1.29 ERA in nine games… The Giants are in fourth place in the Central League with a 24-31-4 record, eight games back of first-place Yakult.
