K-State Summer Baseball Update: July 6

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Each week throughout the summer, k-statesports.com takes a look at current and former Wildcats in collegiate summer leagues and in the professional ranks.

Alaska Baseball League
Junior-to-be James Allen tossed four scoreless innings in two appearances last week for the Mat-Su Miners... The right-hander tossed two no-hit innings with a pair of walks against Peninsula on Tuesday in a game the Miners won 3-0 in 13 innings... He came back on Friday to allow one hit with a walk and a strikeout in two innings of an 8-2 Mat-Su win over Anchorage... Another junior-to-be, Matt Applegate, took the loss in his only appearance of the week on Monday against Peninsula... The right-hander allowed three runs - only one of which was earned - on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts in five innings... In three starts this summer, Applegate is 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA with three walks and 10 strikeouts... The right-hander has allowed three earned runs in 21 innings, while he is limiting opponents to a .178 batting average... Allen is 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA and two saves in 11 innings of work.

California Collegiate League
Junior-to-be Mike Kindel was 5-for-25 (.200) with four runs scored, three RBI, three steals and a double in seven games last week for the San Luis Obispo Blues... He went 1-for-4 in the first two games of the week before four-straight hitless contests... He came back on Monday with a 3-for-5 game with a double, a RBI a steal and two runs scored against the San Jose Seals... In 20 games this summer, Kindel is hitting .300 (21-for-70) with four doubles, two triples, 13 RBI and eight steals... Justin Lindsey started on Saturday against the Marysville, allowing two runs on eight hits in just 2.2 innings to take his first loss of the summer... In three starts, the right-hander is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA... The Blues are 18-9 overall and 14-6 in the CCL.

Cape Cod Baseball League
Nick Martini, another future junior, was 3-for-17 (.176) with four walks, a RBI, a run scored and a steal in five games last week for the Falmouth Commodores... The outfielder was 2-for-4 against Bourne on Wednesday and drove in a run at Cotuit on Sunday... In 19 games this summer, Martini is hitting .203 (13-for-64) with three doubles, a triple and eight RBI... The Commodores are third in the Cape Cod Western Division at 9-11... Martini beings play at the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials on Tuesday in Cary, N.C.

Central Plains Baseball League
Four K-State freshmen from this past season - Jake Doller (pitcher), Chase Graskewicz (catcher), Ryan Moore (outfielder) and Tyler Sturges (pitcher) - as well as a trio of signees - Johnny Fasola (pitcher/infielder), Shawn Lewick (pitcher) and Jared King (infielder) - are playing this summer for the Junction City Generals... Updated player stats for the Generals were not available.

Coastal Plain League
Junior-to-be Kyle Hunter was stellar for the Petersburg Generals on Thursday against Wilson despite not factoring into the decision... The left-hander threw six shutouts innings, allowing just three hits and one walk to go along with 10 strikeouts... The Generals eventually lost the game, 1-0, as Wilson scored a run in the bottom of the eighth... In two starts this summer, Hunter has no record and a 1.80 ERA, allowing just two earned runs on six hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts in 10 innings of work... He is also limiting opponents to a .158 batting average... Junior-to-be Kent Urban is also playing in Petersburg this summer, but did not see any action last week... The Generals are 7-27 overall this season and 0-6 in the second half.

Jayhawk Baseball League
Junior-to-be Matt Giller and sophomore-to-be Blair DeBord are playing for the El Dorado Broncos this summer... Through games played on Sunday, Giller is hitting .235 (12-for-51) with a double, three home runs and 16 RBI... His .431 slugging percentage is fourth on the team... DeBord is 7-for-54 (.130) with a double, a homer and three RBI... Sophomore-to-be Nick Cocking recorded a pair of hits on Tuesday for the Liberal Bee Jays against Junction City... Through games on Sunday, Cocking is hitting .280 (7-for-25) with a double, a triple and four RBI.

Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association
Kayvon Bahramzadeh and Jake Brown are playing for the Palm Springs Power, which leads the Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association with a 22-1 overall record and a 13-0 mark in league play... Bahramzadeh earned the start against the Southern California Cardinals on Tuesday, taking a no decision after allowing three runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts in five innings... The Power went on to win the game, 4-3... Bahramzadeh has not factored into the decision in two starts this season, while he holds a 2.00 ERA after allowing two earned runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts in nine innings of work... Brown did not play last week for the Power... In five games, the second baseman is 1-for-6 with two walks and a sacrifice fly.

Topeka Golden Giants (Independent)
Three current Wildcats propelled the Topeka Golden Giants to three wins last week... Wednesday saw Brandon Faulkner take a no-hitter into the fourth inning and eventually take the win for the Golden Giants against El Dorado... Sophomore-to-be Tanner Witt also had a RBI single against the Broncos... On Friday, Witt came through with the go-ahead RBI single against Dodge City before sophomore-to-be Robert Hawkins pitched one inning of relief to earn the win against Dodge City on Saturday... Updated statistics for the Golden Giants were not available... Through games on June 20, incoming pitcher Cody Faulkner held a 1-1 record and a 6.00 ERA, allowing six earned runs in nine innings... Brandon Faulkner was 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA, surrendering just six earned runs in 25.2 innings... Hawkins had no record with a 2.25 ERA, while Witt was 3-for-22 (.136) with three walks, two steals and two runs scored.

Tri-State Collegiate League
Sophomore-to-be Brad Clement is playing for Northern Ohio Baseball... The infielder went 2-for-4 with a double, a RBI and a run scored against Shannon on Wednesday... Through games played on Wednesday, Clement was hitting .385 (5-for-16) with two doubles, a home run and eight RBI... Northern Ohio is 9-6 this summer to sit third in the league.

K-State Pros
Drew Biery: Biery, a 2009 draft pick by San Francisco, was 3-for-18 (.167) with a home run and two RBI in five games last week for High A San Jose... He hit a solo homer at Visalia on Tuesday before a RBI single on Wednesday... In 68 games this season, Biery is hitting .276 with six doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 40 RBI... San Jose, which won the first half of the California League North Division, is 3-9 to sit fifth in the second half.

Justin Bloxom: The reigning South Atlantic League Player of the Week, Bloxom went 9-for-34 (.265) with two home runs and three RBI over the last eight games for Low A Hagerstown... The first baseman hit solo home runs in consecutive games at Lakewood on Tuesday and Wednesday, while he had a three-hit game on Friday... In 80 games this season, the 11th-round pick of the Washington Nationals in 2009 is hitting .321 with 25 doubles, four triples, seven homers and 53 RBI to go along with nine stolen bases... Bloxom ranks second in the league in hits (103) and total bases (157), third in doubles and runs scored (53), fourth in average, fifth in RBI, sixth in OPS (.856) and seventh in slugging percentage (.489)... The Suns, who finished third in the first half in the South Atlantic League Northern Division, sit fourth with a 5-7 second-half mark.

Adam Cowart: Cowart won his first game in nearly a month on Saturday when he pitched seven solid innings against St. Paul... Cowart, who is in his second with the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, allowed two runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts in a 9-2 Wichita victory, giving Cowart his first win since June 5... In 10 starts this season, the right-hander is 3-5 with a 3.84 ERA... The Wingnuts finished the first half of the league standings fifth in the north division at 20-28.

Eric Eymann: Eymann, a 2005 selection by the Cincinnati Reds in 2005, was 7-for-29 (.241) with three doubles and three RBI over the last eight games Double A Carolina... He had run-scoring double against Jacksonville and at Chattanooga each of the last two Mondays... In 75 games this year, the infielder is hitting .275 with 17 doubles, a triple, five home runs and 33 RBI... Carolina, which finished last in the Southern League North Division during the first half, is third at 7-7 in the second-half standings.

Jared Goedert: Goedert recorded a hit in six of his seven games last week for Triple A Columbus as he continues to impress since being called up from Double A Akron on June 4... Over the last eight days, Goedert went 8-for-29 (.276) with a double, three home runs and nine RBI... The third baseman hit a two-run homer against Gwinnett on Monday before a three-run shot the next day against Indianapolis... He also hit a solo home run on Sunday at Toledo before wrapping up the three-game series with a two-hit effort the next day against Mud Hens... In 27 games for Columbus, Goedert is hitting a solid .321 with eight doubles, 11 home runs and 26 RBI... His average, slugging percentage (.708) and OPS (1.094) would lead the International League if he met the required minimum of at-bats, but Goedert is already tied for 17th in home runs despite playing in less than 30 games... A 2006 draft pick by Cleveland, Goedert was hitting .325 with 14 doubles, seven homers and 32 RBI in 44 games in Double A before being called up... Columbus still leads the International League West Division at 53-32, 9.5 games ahead of second-place Indianapolis.

Lance Hoge: Hoge, a 2009 draft selection of the New York Mets, is pitching for the Savannah Sand Gnats of the South Atlantic League, but did not throw last week... His last appearance came on June 26 when he tossed a scoreless inning... In 18 appearances this year, Hoge is 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA and one save... He has allowed 15 earned runs on 40 hits in 46.0 innings with a 33-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio... The Sand Gnats, who won the southern division first-half title, are seventh at 4-8 in the second half.

Ben Hornbeck: Hornbeck, a 2008 draft pick by Oakland, did not factor into a decision in either of his two starts last week for the Stockton Ports of the High A California League... Against Bakersfield on Tuesday, the left-hander allowed three runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings of work... Hornbeck was in line for the win until the Blaze took a late lead, but Stockton came back to win, 6-8... Hornbeck received the Fourth of July start against Modesto, allowing four runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts in six innings... Modesto scored a run in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings, but the Ports scored two runs in the bottom of the 12th for the victory... In nine starts in High A, Hornbeck is 1-2 with a 4.79 ERA in 47 innings, while allowing 16 walks and striking out 54... Stockton finished the first half fourth in the north division at 31-39 and is fourth to begin the second half at 6-6.

Trevor Hurley: Hurley, a 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star, threw four no hit innings and earned three saves in four games last week for the Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League... The right-hander recorded at least one strikeout in all four games, while he had two punch outs against Lexington on Wednesday and struck out the side at Delmarva on Sunday... A 2008 draft pick by the Texas Rangers, Hurley is 0-1 but holds a 1.43 ERA and 11 saves in 26 appearances this season... He has allowed just six earned runs in 37.2 innings pitched with 10 walks and 50 strikeouts, the second most in the league among closers with at least five saves this season... His 11 saves are tied for fourth in the league, while he would rank second in ERA if he had pitched the required minimum of innings... The Crawdads finished the first half second in the northern division and are third to begin the second half with a 7-5 record.

Carter Jurica: Jurica, a third-round draft selection by San Francisco this year, went hitless in his first 14 at-bats of the week for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes before producing a single and a two-run homer - his first as a professional - at Everett on Saturday... He came back with a two-RBI triple and three runs scored against Vancouver on Sunday before a 1-for-3 contest Monday... In the first 15 games of the season, Jurica is hitting .200 (8-for-55) with a triple, a home run, six RBI and eight runs scored... The Volcanoes are 8-10 to tie for second in the Northwest League West Division.

A.J. Morris: Morris, a fourth-round draft choice of the Washington Nationals in 2009, continued his rehab assignment for the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Nationals with two starts last week... On Tuesday against the GCL Marlins, Morris allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts, but rebounded on Saturday against the GCL Astros, throwing four innings of one-hit ball with another three punch outs... The right-hander, who will soon rejoin the Potomac Nationals of the High A Carolina League, holds a 1-2 record and a 3.91 ERA in 10 starts for Potomac... The P-Nats, who concluded the first half third in the northern division at 31-39, are 5-6 in the second half.

Adam Muenster: Muenster, a 29th-round draft choice by Cincinnati in this year's draft, had a pair of two-hit games last week for the Arizona League (AZL) Reds... The second baseman went 1-for-4 against the AZL Royals on Tuesday before a 2-for-3 game with a RBI double on Thursday against the AZL Dodgers... After a hit at the AZL Brewers on Friday, Muenster came back with another run-scoring double vs. the AZL Athletics on Sunday... In 12 games this season, Muenster is 10-for-43 (.233) with two doubles and five RBI... The AZL Reds are tied for second in the central division at 6-6.

Justin Murray: Murray, a 2008 draft selection by Oakland, took a no decision in his third Double A start of the season last week... Against Arkansas on Saturday, the right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings of an eight-inning contest... Murray was in line for the win until the Travelers scored five runs over the final three innings for a 6-5 victory... In three starts for Midland, Murray is 0-1 with a 4.80 ERA in 15 innings pitched... He earned a promotion from High A Stockton on June 18 after going 6-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 12 starts for the Ports... His six wins in High A are still tied for 11th, while he is tied for 13th in ERA... Midland finished third in the first half of the Texas League South Division standings at an even 35-35, and is tied for second to begin the second half at 5-6.

Nate Tenbrink: Tenbrink, a 2008 selection by Seattle, was 7-for-22 with four RBI in seven games last week for Double A West Tenn... He tallied a sacrifice fly against Tennessee on Monday before going 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and a two-run single on Thursday... He was also 2-for-4 against the Smokies on Saturday... Tenbrink began the season at High A High Desert, hitting .379 with 10 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 42 RBI and 14 steals in 43 games before being promoted on May 26... West Tenn finished the first half second on the Southern League North Division, and is fifth in the second half at 5-9.

Carlos Torres: Coming off an International League Pitcher of the Week honor, Torres, a 2004 selection by the Chicago White Sox, took a no decision last week for the Charlotte Knights... Torres, the latest former Wildcat to play in the Major Leagues, allowed five runs on eight hits with five walks and four strikeouts in 6.1 innings at Norfolk on Thursday... The Knights eventually won the game, 7-5, thanks to a three-run ninth inning... The right-hander, who is 6-5 with a 3.29 ERA in 16 starts this year, is second in the International League in innings pitched (104.0) and fourth in strikeouts (92)... Charlotte is second in the south division with a 42-44 mark.

Rob Vaughn: A 30th-round pick in the 2009 draft by the Chicago White Sox, Vaughn saw action in a pair of games last week for the Great Falls Voyagers of the Rookie Pioneer League... He was a defensive replacement at Missoula on Wednesday and went 0-for-4 in a start against the Osprey on Friday... The Voyagers are second in the north division with an 8-6 record.

Byron Wiley: Wiley, a 22nd-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds in 2008 but a free agent signee by Arizona this season, is a member of the Visalia Rawhide of the California League... The outfielder has not played since June 14... In nine games this season for Visalia, Wiley is hitting .286 (10-for-35) with a homer and seven RBI... The Rawhide finished the first half third in the north division at 37-33, and are second to begin the second half at 7-5.
